so i am moving to Colorado and going to school in boulder. I have a pair of rossy bandit B78 that have been a great groomer hard day ski. Now that im going to get to see more days being in colorado and skiing more powder days i want a pair of pow skis. looked at reviews and seems like the atomic bent chetler is my style for sure, but i am worried they will sell out before i get to demo them... so do i wait and demo before i buy or should i just go for it? thanks guys.
Normally I'd say just demo them, just because no harm can come and you can see if you like or dislike a certain ski. Unfortunately, every year the bent chetler has been out, it has sold out obscenely fast. So, I'd probably say if you get a chance to demo, then do it, otherwise go into a shop and talk about what would be the best ski to fit your personal needs, and if it's something like the chetler then go with that, if it's something else, then go with that, etc.
i'm just worried because the 2012 model comes out in September and ill be in boulder then with plenty of shops around that should have them i would think, but it wont even be snowing yet and most places open up in November.
Yeah, like I said it's a tough call. If I were you, I would go into a couple shops and talk to guys that have skied multiple powder skis, similar and not similar to the bent chetler. Just ask them what they think would be best for your height, weight, ability, and style (charging, fucking around, lots of trees, open faces, everything, etc.) because every ski has it's own personality, and while two skis might both be amazing at the same type of skiing (like the pontoon and the hellbent or the suspect and the elizabeth), one might excel in a completely different area of that type of skiing (pontoon=incredibly directional, bent=twin, suspect=skinny ultra-stiff park ski, elizabeth=complete noodle, super wide fucking around park ski). The main thing is to find a ski that excels in the type of snow you're trying to use it for, and the area of that type of skiing that you like to do.
For what it's worth, I'd have to say jus get it. Last years was amazing and I have only heard good things about next years. Highly doubt you'll be disappointed in the chetlers. Everyone I know with last years says they will never ever ever sell them...ever.
To throw a monkey wrench into the mix though, the opus is just sick. Thought maybe it was just me but I talked to another buddy today who also got em early who was just as blown away by them and considers them the best ski he's ever rode period. I felt the same way but I'm kinda line biased so to hear it from someone else jus confirmed it. But the opus as well will most likely be sold out quick so I'd do some research and pre order one with the quickness. Either ski you can't go wrong.
If I were you, I would buy it and not open them. Leave them in the plastic and don't mount them. Then demo them and see if you want them. If you like them, you already have them, if you don't, you can sell them or trade them for a different ski
Blakes got a good point but you know damn well that after that first dump your gonna have that plastic off and mounted before the roads are plowed...lmao
Also as far as length you could totally get away with the 183. At you height and weight I wouldnt consider the 192 unless your pretty sure your gonna be huckin some tallish cliffs. It's all preference but if your semi aggressive that 183 will turn alot quicker in the trees and the 192 will give some extra stability fir bombin the big stuff. Depends what your gonna use it for.
I'm pretty aggressive and am just fine on the opus 185 and I'm 6'1" 190 lbs.
Sorry to thread-jack, but which would you recommend between the opus and the chetler? I'm getting
some free hellbents this season, and I was thinking about selling them
and getting either some opuses or chetlers. I'm 5'10", 130lbs, expert
level, fairly aggressive skier. I drop medium sized cliffs, and charge
a bit, but also like to play around, so I look for the best of both
worlds in a ski. The main thing I'm worried about with the opus is the
float, because I loved the unsinkability of the hellbent, but the
nimbality sounds worth it. I would get the 185 opus or the 183 chetler.
What should I do?
Honestly they're both good skis. The chetlers are amazing. Last years were anyway. But as far as the opus, not sure how many lines you've ridden but it's like they took all the best stuff from last years bacons and all the best stuff from the ep pros and put it all into one ski. I'm dead serious when I say it's the best ski I've ever been on. I really can't tell ya much about the float in pow from experience but if ya read my post from above my buddy got em too and has ridden a few days in about 10" of pow on top of probably 3' of crud and said those skis killed it. I've only had em a few weeks and ride them on some hardpack nasty booshit and they were soooo stellar that I'm sellin my cryptos and makin it my everyday ski for everything....even park. Plus the ski us made to float so that won't be an issue. A real real close second would be the chetlers. They're another great quiver of one. To me last years felt a touch soft for my liking but not enough to make me not buy it. That's a tough decision dude.
Honestly man, the BC is one of the few skis I would recommend you buy and skip the demo. Never experienced someone disliking them, and they are in my top 3 favorite pow skis ever.
I dunno exact specs but if I based it off this years opus against last years chetlers....I'd say the opus is stiffer....but that said last years ep pro was softer than the opus and those two ride together and are good friends so I imagine they will trend together to a degree.... if that makes any sense...like its been my experience that the chetlers were more of a bacon/ ep pro blend anyway and essentially that's what the opus is this year....these two guys ski alot of the same stuff...big mountain/freestyle....it's a real tough call...I think you'll be happy whichever one ya go with....I've heard that if your airs are more tech go chetlers and if your more of a bigger floatier airs type go opus but I haven't spent that kind of time on either to say that....this may sound kinda cheesy but watch some vids of the two of them and see which ones style is closest to yours....I say this because they design those skis to compliment their style. Not the best way to pick out a ski...haha....but if your deadlocked between the two it may help to translate what will work for ya...if ya haven't already check out the nimbusindependant site and watch the approach vid...good luck
Ill take a look at the opus thanks! any one know where you can get the BCs? have they already come out or are they in September? i did some research and cant figure it out.
So I just hand flexed opus's and chetlers right next to each other at colo freeskier and bentchetlers are stiffer by a bit. opus is medium soft and chetlers are a perfect medium flex.
both are sweet. skis.com has them both for preorder.
ya u are right. they were up the other day but aren't anymore. i wouldn't worry tho there will be plenty of places to get em as long as u don't wait too long.
put it this way, i love them so much i got a pair to use in Pennsylvania. Yes, like the place that has 750 vertical mountains and rarely ever any powder. but they are that fucking AWESOME. get them now
@enroute....was that the 12'chets ya flexed versus the opus or the 11's...plus I have noticed on my opus that the tips are def softer than the tails where the 11' chets seemed to have more of a symmetrical flex like last years bacons....I actually like it on the opus though...makes nose butters easier but still isn't at all chattery at speed like you'd expect and you can def drive the tails hard.
Thanks for all the advice guys i seriously have not heard a single bad thing about they and they seem to fit my style really well. i emailed a couple shops in boulder, and they are going to get them at the start of august! pretty stoked to ride these! sounds like they should even handle well on some groomers long as it not super hard. im thinking putting some jester schizos on them thoughts?
Well take this with a grain of salt because I've never owned the schizos...but to me it seems like that's just one more thing to break...I get it...really I do...but if you've got a decent idea of where you'd like to mount I'd say just get the regular jesters...or if ya got the money go with that badass look pivot...can't remember the model name but it looks jus like the Rossi fks and those looks are friggin bombproof.....they ain't cheap but I don't think there's a better binding out there...the jesters are damn good but those looks are better.
Yeah jus looked it up...it's the look pivot 18 XXL....it's all chrome and looks sick but it's got a lowest din of 10 so you prob need to be ridin a din 11 or better...so either way good luck!
here's my 2 cents I am 5' 11" 190 been skiing 11 years and I bought this ski last year with marker barons. This is the funnest ski I've ever been on, I've taken it out for a park competition and still had fun though it's best with powder landings not park. Though i didn't demo i just read up on it watch videos and it was my ski of choice even early season if it wasn't for rocks
Atomic has already shipped the chetler, and they r currebtly on the wall in our shop, don't look for them later than a week into december, and u should be good
