i was in ravenna (the worlds best place to view christian churches/art from between 300-500) or so. and there, jesus is always depicted as a young (i would say under 20 actually), blond guy with short hair AND NO BEARD.

WHICH is probably far off given his birthplace. but its funny that nowadays he is more this long haired, bearded bum-type of guy.

I AM JUST SAYING THAT YOU ARE RIGHT. CAPS LOCK ARE TOTALLY NECESSARY. JESUS IS WHATEVER YOU WANT HIM TO BE AKA AS TOTAL FICTION.

I didn't say Jesus didn't exist, I believe he did. I'm not forcing my ideals on him. He said think what you will of him believing he was the son of god, and I responded with what I thought. It certainly doesn't mean I wouldn't try to or couldn't hold a conversation with him, as I posted earlier.

holy shit reading threads on NSG is painful... some of these responses are borderline uncivilized. Religion is a crock, all of it. The closest thing we'll ever know to a God is the intricate math that encompasses all things in our universe. There's no heaven and no hell... so don't try to convince me there are consequences for my belief system. The only "consequence" I see is that I can live a full happy life now in love and light without outdated ideals plaguing my thoughts and decisions.

Jesus may have been a real person, and for all we know he may have even performed "miracles". Miracles happen almost every day somewhere in the world and result directly from the full access to our human potential... of which the average person uses only around 10%. In the end I choose not to care, I have much more important decisions to make, such as what to make myself for lunch right now.

i'm sorry, i was drunk, but i kind of stand by that statement. to say that jesus didn't exist and belittle others' beliefs is as naive, if not more, than saying jesus most certainly did exist as told by the bible and shoot down those who believe he outright didn't exist. i'm not saying that's what you're doing. don't get me wrong.

i think its funny how the same people who complain about people "putting down gays" because they should be able to live how they want, are the same ones that bash christians because of the way that they chose to live. Kind of seems like a double standard to me. "Live like you want if you want to like the same sex, but youre a moron if you decide to believe in God, you definitely cant live like that". How bout we just let everyone believe what they want? Atheists always complain about christians forcing their beliefs on them, but it really seems like it is the other way around here, and that its actually the atheists who decide that their way should be the only way and anyone else is just dumb.

I'm an atheist. I see where you're coming from, but hear me out on this. I believe that gays should be able to get married and people should be able to practice their religion as they please as long as no one is harmed in the process. That being said, I am repulsed by homosexuality. It's disgusting, IMO, but so is doing cocaine. I have no right to stop any of them from doing so, nor do I want to because I respect that they should have freedom to do so. Same goes with religion, I do not agree with what Christians believe in, however, I do respect their freedom to practice doing so. Never has anyone "forced" their beliefs on me, and if they have, it is not really a big deal to me, I can just laugh it off or ignore it. I try to keep an open mind, and posting my legitimate response to the "is Jesus real?" thread would only make it seem like I am pushing my beliefs on others. People should be able to do as they please, but I should be able to have an opinion about it.

People put down Christians not because of the way they live, but because the way the majority of them make major decisions in their lives. "Because the bible says so" is a ridiculous cop out that most Christians will happily cling to when they aren't responsible enough to make their own decisions, or when they want to deny accountability from any/all life choices. Bottom line is.. most people don't care what you believe, but WHY you believe it. Most people don't attack religion so much as the idea of "faith". If "faith" wasn't such a childish concept, there probably wouldn't be people calling Christians stupid. Also, being gay isn't the same as being Christian (or even close enough to be a comparison for your argument). Ignoring logic is a choice, and one that is rightfully ridiculed... being gay isn't a choice.

well at least one side is trying to look for other solutions when the other party holds to standards created 2000 years ago by someone who was definitely not god.

it bothers me when someone says that the bible was godly inspired. seriously, what a bad book is this for a god? first of all, there are four books in the new testament that tell the same fucking story. what? and they are not even telling the same facts (example the wonder of the loafs and fishes, different numbers of bread). i am not saying that god isnt there and he didnt write it, but seriously, he is one heck of a bad writer.

the whole thing is full of contradictions and weird quotes that dont have any meaning to our current lives. and i bet that i have read more parts of the bible than 95% of you "christians".

kinda offtopic but fuck off. i am not that tolerant as i would like to be.

Do you realize that the bible you are reading is a canonized version of an enormous amount of biblical texts? There are contradictions because parts are missing, interpolated, or lost in translation. It's like reading Moby Dick with every other chapter taken out, it just wouldn't make sense most of the time, despite the capabilities of Herman Melville.

the bible is a combination of many different texts yes. The reason that these texts lasted and others didnt was because these were known to be the most accurate. I am certainly not saying that every single part of the bible is free of contradictions, but I am saying that simply because it is a group of texts doesnt mean that it isnt any less accurate. By your argument any history book out there would be full of contradictions because it is a combination of many different facts and doesnt contain information from every piece of information that there is on the subject.

False, they picked the books that supported the Holy Trinity. Anything that was found to make Jesus seem like an individual man was deemed as heretical. Their method was precise, not accurate.

Ehhh that is debatable. Over the first couple of centuries there were numerous times in which the church came together to look over and decide which books would "make the cut". It wasnt one mans agenda that was deciding what books would be included, but instead sort of a survival of the fittest thing going on. The best books were the ones that made it, no necessarily the ones that fit the individuals agenda (considering their agendas would have changed over the course of 200 years). The original books that were included in the bible went through very little change over the first few hundred years because they were believed to be the most accurate. Of course some things may have been left out on purpose, im not denying that, but that can be seen all throughout history (you wont see much about JFK's personal life in a history book), and I still believe in the biblical accounts of jesus' life

General moral principles throughout the bible are good, and are great as a very simple set of rules that you would perhaps teach children. But many specifics are easily proven immoral (in many situations) by common logic. The fact is, morality is alot more complex than the bible makes it out to be, and when people take the bible as infallible concrete fact, it leaves no room to argue or amend based on a more current (by almost 2000 years) perspective.

I would certainly agree with this. You certainly have to take everything in its context. You have to realize that a lot of times the more extreme things that Jesus said (according to the bible) were said to the religious hierarchy of the day and were actually meant to demonstrate a point and should not be taken as literally as far too many people do (in my opinion)
