seriously i really like my kit lens (18-55). my 50mm f1.8 doesnt have IS and i can clearly see the difference.

the only thing that bugs me on mine is the bad focusing ring, it focuses past infinity and the front rotates, which is maddening with polarizers

The IS is really only helpful for hand held filming, which you should never be doing with a hddslr anyway. With a ok tripiod or glide cam, IS is pointless, which is why ill always recommend nonIS versions of lesnes to save money.

there are lots of times when you could find yourself filming handheld. when i went to south america i wasn't able to bring a glidecam or tripod so i had to film handheld and the IS helped a shit ton.

plus if you're using a telephoto, even on a tripod, the IS will help eliminate small shakes from pulling focus or anything else that could make the camera move a tiny bit.

that being said, i don't think IS is essential and I have bought non-IS lenses in the past to save money, but if you have the cash then why not just get the IS

that shouldnt equate to several hundred dollars extra in a lens (i.e 70-200 f/4 vs 70-200 f/4 IS)

Used my 18-55 IS for the first time in at least 5 months. I've just been using my 24mm F2.8 and 50 F1.8, both non IS. As much as 50 F1.8 is better than 55 F5.6, its nice to be able to shoot 1/20 with absolutely no motion blur, and everything's in focus.
