Rap is not that far from metal.

I had a thought the other day. the vocals in metal music has almost the same idea as rap.

im listening to tyler the creator right now and thinking "holy shit, this reminds me a lot of old slipknot albums". in both genres, flow is important. the only huge difference is that in rap music, words>music
and in metal it goes music>vocals. and metal doesnt always rhyme.

my point being, if you took something like ofwgkta or old slim shady and got a vocalist from a metal band to scream it, it would fit pretty well.

the way i think of it is that if it were on a graph comparing all genres of music, it might look like the political spectrum where left wing and right wing are actually not far off, and the graph is kind of in a circular shape.

obviously they're still very different, i'm just talking about parts like this

and the part in this song at 1:33 is heavy enough to be mixed into a metal song



but then again, this in ns where everybody is super hood and knows everything, so i'm probably wrong. just my opinion that certain parts of rap are very similar to certain parts of metal

drugs, sex, violence, all of that... is in any genre. ill say that youre right in your thoughts of rap and metal but if you scream the lyrics of a mellow folk song over a heavily distorted guitar and bass, it will sound like metal as well.

It's funny how haters say "oh yeah rap's dead mainstream sucks boooo." you ever listen to the beats? they fucking KILL it. the producers nowadays are unbelievably good. if you only care about lyricism listen to some slam poetry.

not saying conscious rap is bad...but it's just another aspect of hip hop. what is coming out now is a lot more like what came out in the 80s and late 70s than anything the early 90s and gangsta rap ever came up with.

from what I've heard, its deathcore, which is a fusion of hardcore and death metal, hence the breakdowns, hence the wanna be scenesters/gangsters/preps that make up said deathcore bands (at least 90%).

OP is an idiot. Metal has so many different sub genres that its impossible to generalize and say " rap sounds like metal". If you would like to generalize metal into one style of music, you are a fool. Perhaps you like nu metal and all the modern garbage metal that is produced, but if you listen to true metal you will find rap and metal are so very far apart that if you favoured one side, the other side wouldnt even be considered music. Listen to some real metal and understand what youre talking about fully before you compare rap/hip hop to metal. And for the record I listen to classic rock and metal but still greatly enjoy great hip hop. Lets play a game of variety of metal and see if you can produce a rap song thats sounds similar at all.









You see what i mean? Ive seen your posts before in metal threads and felt as if i were looking at a tracklisting of a 14 year old girls " metal cd # 3".

?

They are all part of a sub-genre of metal called "nu-metal" which is basically the fusion of rap and metal.

I'm not saying they're the same because they're both vibrations created by some type of instrument, when you take music to its simplest form, its all timed beats/sounds to a certain scale and lyrics match this timing and usually rhyme.

I think slipknot did rap metal kinda things before they were really popular, so they would be closer to rap than a lot of metal bands. Also Public enemy paired up with Anthrax in the 80's...I think a big difference is that rap is usually designed to be clearly enunciated, and the sounds are raw so you can hear what the rapper is saying and distinguish samples and beats clearly, whereas in heavy metal lyrics and sounds are distorted and meld together, words are abstracted more to become a sound.

doubt it....metal might have some sick guitarists or drummers or whatever...but its horendous screaming. Metal is the scum of music. Theres a reason not many people listen to it...because it sucks. And the people who do listen to it tend to be fucking tools and idiots (generalization not everyone). That being said, i doubt you could find 1 metal song i enjoy.

actually a lot of people listen to it. bands with 5 song EP's have more facebook fans than most pro skiers.
also not all metal is screaming. most bands have some singing in songs, sometimes its all singing, sometimes its instrumental.

if you don't like this, then you probably dont like any music with guitars or any music that wasnt made on a synth for that matter.

and when i was refering to metal in the OP, i was referring to my favorite subgenre which is sometimes known as sumeriancore, because a lot of bands that are signed by sumerian records have similar sounds and views with their writing. dude with the bear icon can fuck right off because you don't know what you're talking about.

anyways, this thread has turned into a hatestorm, so let it die. way too many haters on ns to comprehend.
