Damn I'm nervous. I don't think anything matters to me as much as wins right now. My emotional well-being on game days is entirely dependent on the game outcome. If my day sucked, it will become a good day as long as they win. Conversely, it doesn't matter if I win a free car and get a beej from Kate Upton, my day's going to suck if they lose.
Basically, if everything else goes wrong for me for the next 2 and a half months, it will all be okay so long as I hear the CBC announcers say something along the lines of, "and Ryan Kesler has won the Conn Smythe trophy".
I doubt it, I think this particular blend of nervousness and high-strungness can only be brought about by cheering for a perennially cursed franchise. It could probably be simulated by drinking 10 red bulls in a row while having an anxiety disorder.
It helps when your team goes in as the underdog. In the late 90's we knew we were probably going to get raped by Colorado and didn't sweat it too much. I remember 2007, before we played Dallas everything was fine, everyone was all "YAY PLAYOFFS" but just generally happy, not edge-of-the-bridge frantic. Then the first game went 4OT's and this fanbase hasn't stepped back from the brink ever since. Literally every year with this current iteration of the team, there's a series that isn't just tense, it's downright heart-attack inducing - Dallas in 07, Chicago in... every year, LA in 2010 (seriously when we were down 2-1 in that series I was sure we'd lose).
There's just more at stake than a series, particularly lately. With Chicago, losing to Chicago is sickening because of the history. Being upset is sickening because the Nucks are supposed to be good and people plant the "can't win in the playoffs" label on them, so we can't lose in the first round (or to the Preds last year). Basically the only series we could lose and save some face in the past 7 years would've been SJ last year.
If they were serious fans they'd be trying desperately to pretend it never happened at all. I assure you, we are worried about only LA right now. And Luongo. And Daniel's health. And Kesler.
