Given that only one team can win the cup each season, it's really nice when we can all get together as hockey fans and celebrate something that's just plain good for the sport.
Happy Leafs Elimination Day, everyone. In the spirit of giving and in light of the NHL's new "Because of the Cup" advertising campaign, I present to you the Leafs' ad.
I think Duchene is a support player - he is not a guy who can create offense for his linemates at a high level, he is a guy who, when pairied with good linemates, can produce himself at a high level. I.e., he isn't Claude Giroux, he's Scott Hartnell (totally different player but for the purposes of this example, similar).
Landeskog is a fantastic player. He will be the captain when Hejduk retires, I really believe. The Avs can sign a big offensive player, but I really think the Shattenkirk / Stewart trade shot them in the foot for depth, especially at defense.
Offense isn't something to concern yourself with right now. By the time their good young players at that position are truly NHL-primtime-ready, which I think will probably not happen next season so 2013-2014 if all goes well, the team could look significantly different up front through free agency and trades, particularly given the shifting of landscape that is likely to occur in the path and wake of the new CBA.
Also not a big fan of the Varlamov trade, going forward - as an aside, you watched the game last night. Imagine instead of trading that first rounder for Varlamov, you'd traded it plus another pick and a prospect for Corey Schneider. Had that happened I think the Avs would be in better shape. I'd also have preferred them keeping Craig Anderson and seeing how that panned out.
i'd like to see the rangers do well. gaborik is the shit. been one of my favorite players for a long time.
in the west, i wouldnt mind detroit or the blues doing well, but want to see nashville take it. shea weber is fucking awesome, and their games in general are just fun to watch.
Bob Hartley as Head Coach, Patrick Roy as Assistant Coach.
A gang of winners, who all speak French, and a Hab legend who isn't afraid to put the French sports media in their place. Hartley and Roy already get along and have won a Cup together.
Only thing missing is Grigorenko, or Forsberg.
Playoff death watch update, after winning last night the Capitals put themselves back into positive territory with a 55% chance of making the playoffs. Buffalo is at 53%, despite being ahead of the Capitals (because the Caps could conceivably catch the Panthers, who are 4 pts ahead of them with a game in hand. Unlikely, but 2%).
In the west, Dallas is up to 82.5% and in first place in the division because of the tiebreak. Meanwhile, the Coyotes after the win last night are tied with the Stars in points and actually have an 83.6% chance. The Kings are still at 81%.
The Sharks' loss last night plummeted them to a 44.9% chance of making the postseason. Not good. Those games against the Kings are looming very large. Shit's getting pretty real - are Sharks fans still in denial or are they still confident that they can make this happen in the final push? Over to you Sean.
