147 pages in the 2010-11 Thread. Here start's next season.

Now the season's over, Boston has the cup for the summer, but it's all up for grabs come autumn. Bump it through the slow summer months as transactions occur

Oh, and to start some tradition: LOL @ Anaheim.

The thing is they can't use that whole $4mil or if they do it needs to be short term, because Patrick Sharp is coming up UFA soon and will need a raise, probably bring his cap hit up above 5. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few short term deals to fill roster spots on the Hawks.

PS See Sean, told you Burns was a good acquisition, when Babcock agrees with you you know you're right.

I was simply uneasy about it at first because I know that Burns is a converted forward, who's not what I have been asking for for the last few years - which is a guy who's a straight 'motherfucker' on defense to pair with boyle - and he's had concussion problems, and has only one year left on his contract. I was sorta thinking "shit, if this guy walks like Campbell, we're boned"

I might also have been thinking really highly of Coyle, but not remembering that he's going to take a few more years before he comes up and makes his NHL mark. He's at least 3 years down the road, and we only have 3 years really to get a cup done with our current crop of stars before there's a potentially dramatic dropoff, and we have to rebuild for a year or 2, perhaps.

Looking more into it over the last two days I'm really realizing that, what we needed was less of a 'defensive motherfucker to pair with Boyle' and more of a '2nd Boyle to pair with someone else, to take minutes off of Boyle'. That's why we went after White this season... was to get an Offensive minded guy to play 'backup PP qb' to Boyle, and still be decent in his own zone.

But now we have a 26 year old, who can only improve on D, who's fuckin massive, one of the best skating Dmen out there, who can QB the PP - not that we needed THAT much help there, and who can downright fuck shit up. Also, he's a great character guy, who's not one for taking a gazillion penalties. His numbers are not the best, but then again, he was facing the top competition from the other team night in and night out. He had 17 goals as a D man with over 40 points, and like 9 of them were on the Power Play - which shows where he's comfortable...

Looking more into it, this VASTLY improves this team, and I'm fuckin pumped about it. I was uneasy at first because we really gave them a lot of stuff, 2 prospects, and a top 6 scoring forward, who as inconsistant as he is, could still pop a 30 goal season if he's given more minutes as well as PP time - as I expect him to in Minnesota. I also felt we kinda jobbed him, signing him and then trading him within 24 hrs - and he was totally shocked by it, but at the same time, I think he's ready to take on a new challenge in Minnesota and could definitely improve his game there.

All that, you have to pay to recieve, and if Burns re-signs with us for a few years and a swallowable amount, then we're going to be fucking evil next season.

All that this leaves us is finding a good guy on the Powerplay, a strong Defensive Dman like Hejda (or even another good all-arounder like Babchuk) for under 3m, and couple of good PK guys with scoring pop like Dupuis or Ward, and we'll be that much better than last year.


Fuck you Babcock, you're boned next year again. Have fun overpaying for someone haa.

Yeah... I guess SJSEE sold it's stake in the moon to nasa or something, so we can now afford all the overcap penalties, and we did some fifa-style bribary to get NHL to approve it.

Giving up our draft picks for the next 15 years is rough, but fuck it, we'll win like 6 cups in a row, and everyone will take a discount to play with us anyways for the next decade just to get their name on there.

Not as badly as NYI, or Pittsburgh until last year... not even close.

Least the Oilers have renovated that place to the max over the years... they'll be there for at least another 7 years I'd imagine.

67 luxury suites, with plenty of club options and all the oil money in the world to fill them, and it makes 16900 capacity manageable in my opinion... plus they have a pretty damn sick locker room.

I dont understand the idea that players dont want to go there because its cold and the arena's old or something...

I mean... the history of that town for hockey is just awesome. why wouldn't you want to play there!

Dramatic NHL realignment news.



"The purveying plan seeks to divide the league into four divisions -- two with eight teams and two with seven teams. The plan will likely be finalized at December's Board of Governors meeting."

I'm guessing the east will have 16 teams now, as opposed to 14 in the west.

In a hilarious study of homerism I just found out that there are actually people in Montreal who think the Markov signing was a good deal for the Habs.

5.75m per season for a guy coming off knee surgery... I would be furious as a Habs fan.

He's played 52 games in the last 2 years...

I'll eat my words if he plays a full season and does well for them, but even in that case, I feel he's being grossly overpaid right now...

I thought 4.5 would've been a stretch, but some guy is desperately trying to convince me that he's a top 10-15 d-man when healthy and will score 50+ points each year of that contract (which ends when he's 35). I pointed out I'd rather just sign Ehrhoff which would cost sub-5mil.

Not only that, but the Habs have now inflated the price for other D-men...

pushing 6 million with that? now the market for good D-men makes guys who would be priced around 4.5-5m per season, cost more like 6 million... that is, if they play the market card...


Thanks a lot Habs. Fucking shit up again for the rest of us by spending like the Rangers...

Exactly my problem... might drive up Ehrhoff's cost by .500. I still think Bieksa maxes out at the same price as Hamhuis, 4.5, because there's just no justification for paying him more than Dan gets. Hell, for the inverse reason, the league should be thanking the Nucks for signing Hamhuis for that cheap last year and setting an aritificial ceiling. On the other hand, that contract was generally regarded as him taking less than value and from everything I've seen Markov's contract is viewed as borderline insane, so maybe it won't have all that much market impact after all.

At this point, If I were the Habs, I would have let him go if he didnt sign for under 4.5ish+incentives... I guess they feel that he's back to his old self, or that he will be but still that contract is asinine...

The thing with Hamhuis was that he really wanted to sign with the Canucks and be close to home, and play for his boyhood team, so he took a discount for sure... He was to receive way more money if he booked his flights to Pennsylvania with either Pitt or Philly who had offered him more lucrative and lengthy terms, but he wanted to stay in the northwest, ultimately.

I still think Error shouldn't be more than 5m personally... but thats just my feelings about him.

Bieksa might surely command more though.. so there's some serious decisions to be made in Vancouver.

That seems pretty fair. I had it at around 4.3, but 4.6 is reasonable. Query what Ehrhoff will get now. I can see someone offering him 5 but if he wants to stay in Van he will probably not get more than Bieksa, I would be okay with him getting offered the exact same deal; 4.6 for 5 years.

I think Burns gets in the 5-5.25 range, not a lot of D-men scoring 17 goals out there and even better he did it with the Wild's PP. The Wild. What exactly are you going to do PK'ing the Wild? They had Zidlicky and Burns and... nothing else. Gee, I wonder if you're covering the point shot? Yet somehow, there he is, with his 17 goals. On the Sharks, if they play him on PP2 and give PP2 :45 of every 2:00, I see no reason he can't get close to that again despite the drop in ice time that's inevitable.

Here are the teams I'm worried about taking a run at Ehrhoff right now:

1. Avs - have an absolutely painful back end and just lost Liles, will look to replace him with offensive D-man.

2. Columbus - obviously posturing for a playoff spot with the Carter trade, and currently have 3 d-men under contract (one of whom I've never heard of).

3. Chicago - Will want to replace Brian Campbell.

Speaking of Chi-town, ironically, the Nucks' new AHL affiliate? The Chicago Wolves. What do you do with THAT, I wonder, if you're a Chicago hockey fan. "Ok so we'll cheer for them, until they get called up, and then we'll hate them again". Sergei Shirokov is going to be soooo confuuuuused.

Minny's powerplay wasn't even that bad, top half of the league. It's a bit harder than 'cover the point' when you have guys like Mikko Koivu and Marty Havlat up front, the first of which is one of the more underrated set up guys in the league.


Aside from that, I've talked to a bunch of Hawks fans from Chicago that had wolves season tickets that have already asked for a refund or are canceling their tickets now that they're the farm team for Vancouver. Pretty stupid move by the Canucks if you ask me, especially from a marketing/business stand point.

Knowing Wilson though, he's not going to worry about extending his contract until mid-season probably. at which point, he'll offer him a 4 year 20-22 million dollar contract, depending on what 1 year deals he gets this offseason, and how Burns is meshing with this team.

But you're right... He had like 8 or 9 goals on the PP... which just shows you how comfortable he is in the offensive end, and how mean of a shot he has... Minnesota was very middle-of-the-road on the power play last year, and they'd have been a hell of a lot worse if they didnt have Burns to 'quarterback' it. I could only imagine putting him AND Boyle in there on the PP. Considering a guy like Demers is also very much increasing as a PP threat from the backend to play PP2 with Vlasic, I could imagine they throw Boyle and Burns on the same unit from time to time just to ruin everyone's day... When they did it last season with White-Boyle, it worked really well, and then they kinda stopped doing that so much during the Kings series and started pairing Boyle with Demers, and White with Wallin, or vise versa. You didnt really end up seeing Boyle-White much more after that - and the PP was fairly weak thereafter, I felt.

I hear that the Canucks are getting close to a deal with Ehrhoff though...

I don't think stacking it with Boyle would ruin anyone's day. I hate that "every cook in the kitchen at once" approach to setting up a PP. Make your second unit an actual threat and make it a different kind of threat from the first so the PKer's have to adjust constantly. If one PP gets it done with a QB and stretch passes to open up the box, have the second PP play it dirty down low with big point shots and a bunch of deflections.

Not really. The owner's of the team select what franchise they want to purchase affiliation rights to (An AHL team does not have to be affiliated, but they all are, because it's unlikely most AHL owners that aren't NHL owners would be able to pay an entire rosters worth of salaries among other things). In this case, Vancouver had wanted to purchase the affiliation rights of the abbotsford heat from the flames, but that didn't happen and abbotsford re-upped with Calgary. Their only choice once that had happened and once the Moose had moved, was to use the Wolves.

The thing is, losing White and Wallin, I dont know who would step in with Burns on the 2nd PP unit.

Last year it was Boyle-Demers, and White-Wallin, typically... as Vlasic's not usually an Offensive threat UNLESS he's with Demers it seems, and Murray's more of an offensive liability...

If the top line ends up being Boyle-Demers, then unless we really have a lot of faith in Braun as our #6 guy, and don't sign a 6th defenseman who's more offensive oriented (which would be a bit of a mistake IMO as I'd rather have a cheaper, stay at home type guy to pair with Boyle or Burns - Jan Hejda PLEASE) then not only would we have to 'Woostah shuttle' again for that 7th defenseman (I don't really know how I feel about Petrecki or Moore as our 7th guy yet...) but we'd have more offensive D-man depth than I feel is necessary.

You can't have enough depth at the D-man position, sure, but I feel that we already tried having too much focus on offense there rather than strong stay at home defenders - of which we have only one guy who can fill that role - Vlasic. Murray's okay at it, but is more suited to 3rd pairing IMO where he can crunch bones. Demers is more of an all-around guy with more of an offensive touch to him, and is fantastic on the PP (My god did we miss him in the Vancouver series - regardless of how well Huskins did) and Braun, as well as he did filling in, I still dont have faith giving him a full time position quite yet.

If you do play the 'all cooks in the kitchen' card here, then you still have a solid PP2 with Demers-Vlasic. Otherwise, you just have Boyle-Demers and Burns-Vlasic. Splitting up Demers and Vlasic isn't a great idea IMO, as those two played very well together last season.

Kopecky's negotiating rights traded to FLA. Tallon just trying to stack Hawks players.

Hawks weren't going to sign him, so I rather take a 7th round pick than nothing.

Or you play 4 forwards on one unit, or you play Demers - Burns on PP2 with Burns as the anchor providing the point shot and Demers as a rover. It's pretty tough to make units when half the roster isn't set yet. I just hate that idea of "OKAY, our PP1 unit makes 40 million dollars, we're SURE to score now!" No, there are 2 minutes of time, your guys will get tired, take advantage of the fact that they also have to field 2 PK units, one of which will be necessarily worse than the other, and let PP2 do some damage.

The Panthers currently have exactly 3 NHL forwards under contract (and 2 AHL depth guys). After Campbell, their next biggest name d-man is Dimitri Kulikov (of the current cap hit of 1.3 million dollars). They are a blank slate. The guys under contract, Booth Weiss and Dadonov, are all better than their cap hits. They could do some very interesting shit through free agency. But you just know already that they're aiming to get to the cap floor, and that's about all.

he played 80 last season and 77 in the AHL the season before. Prior to that yeah, didn't play that much, but that's definitely a step in the right direction.

Anthony Stewart? who cares? He was okay for the first few months last year in ATL, but was shit in the 2nd half and didnt have that great of underlying numbers... He'd be okay as a cheap 4th liner if healthy, but still... players like that are a dime a dozen on the UFA market this year. He's not a priority for that club, and hasn't really produced at any major level yet. He's just a big body with some moderate scoring pop. He's not really a great defensive option either. Merely a 4th liner on most teams.

How do you think the realignment's going to go? Upon hearing this news that the league will go back to 2 divisions per conference, with 14 teams in the west and 16 in the east, this is what I came up with on the fly...



Pacific (Smythe) Division: San Jose, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Phoenix

Central (Norris) Division: Winnipeg, Minnesota, Chicago, Colorado, St. Louis, Nashville, Dallas

Northeast (Adams) Division: Montreal, Boston, Ottawa, Toronto, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Detroit

Atlantic (Patrick) Division: Rangers, Islanders, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina, Tampa Bay, Florida
