There's a difference between saying "I don't think they'll win" and "They have no chance of winning". Taking a top seed and saying they have no chance is just asinine. Of course they have a chance. Technically everyone who makes the playoffs does, realistically, so one of the top 4 teams in the league has a very GOOD chance.
Sure, I'll make a bet. Put your money where your mouth is. Given that you think they have no chance, I will take you up on your bet if you give me 16 to 1 odds. That would basically be me betting that they have just as good a chance as everyone else who makes the playoffs, and you would be betting that they do not. What do you think?
I'm fine with that, sure, but that's not the point.
The point is that you just admitted you were completely full of shit. If you thought they had no chance, you should have jumped on that bet. I mean, that's much better odds than no chance - you'd just be betting they had less of a chance than any of the other teams who end up making the playoffs. Really, since there are about 20 teams with a realistic shot at making the postseason right now, I could have legitimately asked for 20 to 1 odds and you'd still be ahead if you weren't completely full of shit.
You obviously think the Canucks have better odds than some of the other teams who will be competing for the cup. How about if I say, 8 to 1 odds? Do you think they have less of a chance than HALF of the teams who are making the playoffs? Or do you think they've got a better shot than most? Let's see. Cue up the jeopardy theme...
You were apparently full on joking because you seem to think they have a decent shot at it. I think the Vegas odds are usually right, and I expect the Canucks are about 6 or 7 to 1 against to win it at this point by that reckoning. Which is to say, a pretty damned good chance, and a better chance than most of the top 16 teams. So let's not go nuts.
As for the bet, fine, if the Canucks win I get 5 if the Pens win you get 5. Hell I'll make it 50 or 100 if you prefer.
Since the lockout,
2005-2006 - Missed the playoffs, 9th or 10th I think.
2006-2007 - Beat Dallas. Lost in 2nd round to eventual cup champs Anaheim.
2007-2008 - Missed the playoffs, 9th or 10th again.
2008-2009 - Beat LA. Lost to Chicago in round 2.
2009-2010 - Beat St Louis. Lost to eventual cup champs Chicago in round 2.
2010-2011 - Beat Chicago, Nashville and San Jose. Lost to Boston Bruins in game 7 of SCF.
So the Canucks have made the playoffs 4 times since the lockout. 3 of those times they have lost to the eventual cup champion. They have been favourites once, last year. Other than that year, they have never been higher than 3rd. That's not really a choking record on the whole.
