147 pages in the 2010-11 Thread. Here start's next season.

Now the season's over, Boston has the cup for the summer, but it's all up for grabs come autumn. Bump it through the slow summer months as transactions occur

Wild finally back in the win column tonight.

Fuck edmonton, in the crease all night taking shots at backstrom...matt kassians first NHL game and he beat hordichuk twice in fights.

This is a stupid position to take, people aren't saying Thornton is a dickwad in general, they are referencing a particular event which was classless and idiotic. It's not retarded finger pointing, he did what he did and it's worth a callout.

But on to a new game. The Ducks are pretty awful but the Canucks are hanging Schneider out to dry now that they have a lead. It's not pretty at all. Hilariously I think there are more Vancouver people in the crowd than Ducks fans.

Read my posts dude. I was alluding to the fact that the dude I quoted was trying to turn it around on me, and say the exact same thing I had just said, as if I was the one talking shit or something. That post had nothing to do with Thornton, I had already said my piece on that.



...as for who actually shows up to the Duck Pond? they are barely a step above Phoenix as far as how many home team fans actually show up. It's always been this way.

Unbelievable how many Canucks fans show up for these Dec/Jan California trips....unlike anything else you see in professional sports in North America.

Kesler > Thornton.....shit Thornton may not even be a top 30 player any more (antics aside too)

I'm not surprised that there are few Duck fans so much as I'm impressed with how many Canuck fans are making that trip in late December. There were literally thousands of them, to the extent not just that they cheered the goals but they were making audible noise about missed penalty calls on Canuck guys and chanting "Hiller". A platoon of a thousand away fans isn't enough to be clearly heard on TV.

Eh.. I saw it last year too. About 3 or 4k Nucks fans rolled into LA last season and straight up invaded Staples - which was a far more impressive feat, seeing as there are actual Kings fans, and they regularly sell out. Every year thousands of Sharks fans roll down to Anaheim for the first Sharks @ Ducks game of the season. This year 3500 Sharks fans caravan'd down there in charter buses.... unfortunately to go to a disappointing 1-0 affair.

Also, I think last season thousands of Nordiques fans rolled down from quebec to see an Isles game and took up half of the top deck - which was kinda badass.

I'd take Kesler over Thornton right now on the basis of defensive play. Thornton is PP1 but he isn't PK1 at the same time. Same reason there's a perennial argument for Datsyuk being the best centre in the game.

i got a signed phaneuf jersey for christmas. hahahaa. well, not really. my dad collects jersies and wants to get a bunch framed for the family "hockey" room but gave me the phaneuf one as a bit of a joke because i'm always saying how bad the leafs are and how they need a real "face" of their franchise. phaneuf isn't bad, but he's not the kind of player you build an identity around. kessel can be that, but sadly, it doesn't matter how fucking good you are at scoring goals if you let in 3-4 per game...

This is super sad, and really really unnerving. I've never heard of a Sharks fan drunkenly attacking someone to this extent.

I know it's a growing rivalry between the Sharks and Canucks, but I REALLY hope it never comes to this again...

that's terrible. but i dont think are very many fans that would do that. most people are their to support the team and just enjoy watching the game of hockey. i guess alcohol might have played a role in the incident but it's still unacceptable.

Yeah... this was probably just some fat drunk bitch who starts shit everywhere she goes... (yeah, the person who attacked her was a woman. What the fuck man)

I've seen many fans from other teams come into the tank and leave without the feeling that they should be worried - even after a loss. Hell. One of my best friends is a Kings fan from down south. I've been to at least 12 games with him at the Tank and the most he's gotten is "Kings Suck!" and "LA sucks!" kinda jeers... I'm pretty shocked by this behavior.

Nordiques are a team I wouldn't mind coming back. Decent fanbase, good location for a hockey team...and awesome jerseys. It all adds up!


the whalers on the other hand can suck it. No need for them.

IF the Nordiques came back, they sure as fuck wouldn't have the same jerseys... If they stayed another year and didn't move to Denver, they would have had a logo with a wolf on it or something.

...The Whalers had/have the best logo in sports history, and should almost be returned for that alone... if not for the pure fact that they had a solid fanbase during their entire existence, regardless of the fact that they almost never even made the playoffs. They only moved because Carolina provided them a new arena - It wasn't a Phoenix situation or a Thrashers situation, but more of a Minnesota Northstars situation.

They'd do fine if they returned - That region of the continent is so damn saturated with people - much less hockey loving people - that there's no way it wouldn't work out given a new arena in Hartford. That said... most new CT hockey fans since 1997 are more down with the New York and Boston clubs, so rebuilding a fanbase might be an issue.

yea the new logo was some weird wolf or something similar. They'd probably have to create a new sort of hybrid deal. Winnipeg's stuff came out looking great, so there's faith!


I remember reading somewhere that the Whalers are still the second best selling nhl franchise, most likely entirely due to that logo.


I think location would be a problem for hartford though. It's not a big enough city to really sustain its own fanbase, and its pretty much the geographic line between boston and new york for every sport. By this point everyone's pretty well committed to a side. They also did have some attendance problems. I remember some scheme about them requiring a certain number of season tickets to keep them team being attempted.

Huge sucker punch by Kopecky on Del Zotto in response to a cross check, then Kopecky gets absolutely tuned by Rupp.

What do people think about this? Opinion is split as to whether,

1. Del Zotto started it with the cross check and got what he deserved (Kevin Dineen even said this outright),
2. Kopecky's play was cowardly and dirty and he got what was coming to him from Rupp who was doing exactly what he should have in sticking up for his teammate,
3. Rupp should have left well enough alone after the linesman was there but Kopecky should've stood up and answered the bell for the punch,
4. Rupp is the coward for ripping apart a guy who doesn't fight while he was turtling.

I'm in category number 2. You sucker a guy, you take your damned medicine, and I didn't think what Del Zotto did was anything too far out of the ordinary, you see that all the time to begin with. Interested to see where others fall, particularly people with no bias - I have basically no horse in the East myself.

i agree with you, del zotto gave him a couple little hits but this happens all the time in front of the net and he overreacted in my opinion. if he sucked it up and didnt lose his temper than del zotto wouldve gotten a penalty because the ref had his arm up ready to call it and he blew it by cheap shotting del zotto in the side of the head.

What - that Kesler > Thornton or that Thornton is no longer top 30?

Let's start with Kesler > Thornton:

Since 2006/2007 Thornton's regular season points have dropped each (except one +3) year culminating in only 70 points and a +4 last year. In addition, he is -11 and -5 in the last two post seasons while exiting and not being a strong captain.

Since 2006/2007 Kesler's regular season points have increased and he finished ahead of Joe Thornton last year in scoring by 3 points and with a +/- 20 points higher than Thornton. Add to that his strong post season in which he was the Canucks MVP and completely dominated the Nashville Predators.

When has Thornton dominated a play off series?

Forget the points for a minute and consider that Kesler is a 2nd line center tasked with shutting down other teams top players and its even more impressive what he accomplishes. Thornton is given a pass on a lot of defensive work, and still can't put up that impressive points. Its not just me saying this too, Thornton is regularly criticized by far more knowledgeable NHL analysts.

As for Thornton being top 30....I'd take any of these players ahead of Thornton (in no particular order):

H Sedin, D. Sedin, Malkin, Crosby, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kane, Sharp, Toews, Franzen, Perry, Parise, Hossa, Weber, Chara, Hartnell, Seabrook, Stamkos, Kesler

So he may may be top 30, but I no longer buy into him being a top 20 player. His skill level is certainly impressive, but if that's all you rate a player on than the likes of Semin should be considered 'Top 30' too.

Why? Coming into this year I figured Malkin had a decent shot at the Art Ross. He's legitimately one of the 5 or so best individual offensive threats alive, along with imo Hossa, Crosby, Ovy and Stamkos.

Now, I'm not the most knowledgeable about hockey stats and whatnot, but I'm educated enough to know that points and +/- are by no means the end all be-all of how good a player is. Take into consideration how much Thornton's offensive zone start % has decreased over the last few years, as well as his TOI, and how much more often he's been used on the PK into consideration. Not to mention his Corsi or anything else. He lead the league in takeaways last year - something that has been dominated the last few years by Pavel Datsyuk. Kesler wasn't even on the radar for that stat - something I consider pretty damn important - either in total, or average.

I don't care if you'd rather have Kesler lol. I'd personally rather have Thornton. The end.

Malkin is one of the top players in the world. I didnt read anything but this figuring you are saying he is not that great. you are insane, the guy is a fucking beast on the ice and he puts the puckin in the net or on someone elses stick so they can put it in the net.

watch a few pens games and then say you wouldnt pick malkin.

If you're going to throw in Hossa, you might as well plug Marleau into that mix, seeing as he's just as streaky... Not to mention - he's the 3rd most tallied goal scorer over the last 3 years behind only Ovy and Stamkos. That said, I don't really want to plug either of them as part of the top 5 offensive threats. I do however absolutely agree on Malkin.

datsyuk has games that blow minds

rick nash always has highlight reel goals where he dangles through the whole team. and the thing i love about nash is that when he plays for team canada, he's always one of our top players. he just needs a team. freaking columbus..

Yeah, you've got to feel for him.

Phenomenal player who has been stuck on a terrible Columbus team his entire career. I'd like to see him move up to Edmonton if Ryan Smith retires soon....Columbus however at this point should do him a square and send him somewhere money.

FIrst half of the season is over. How did you think your teams did? Wings are playing good. Good O and D. Rookies are producing stellar plays and goal tendings been phenomenal. I do wish to see more out of zetty though. Other than that, i can't complain.

The Jets have exceeded my expectations so far. Hopefully they continue playing well and get through this road stand with some wins.

I can't be anything other than pleased with the Flyers so far. Still a little bitter over our goaltender situation but I'm hoping bryz can find his way out of the woods sooner than later. Regardless it has been very entertaining to watch most of the games.

Had they managed to not play like complete garbage their last week of the year I'd say the Nucks finished up well after a very poor start. Last few games have been horrific. Need desperately to get back to the winning ways, go on a run.

Kind of sloppy game but a wins a win. I'll take it. Sloppy D in front of the net at some points. Offense doing good with creating chances and such. This games gonna hurt Howard's numbers but 24 wins is fantastic. Bring on the leafs.

john tortorella got a 30k fine for his comments on the reffing, definitely a bit much. just because you're an NHL coach doesnt mean you should have to give up your right to free speech.
