Uhhhh whaaat?
Letang's suspension had nothing to do with the guy "getting hit hard", he didn't get a suspension because he hit the guy too hard, he got a suspension because the hit was boarding. As in, against the rules. The Phaneuf hit was in no way against the rules. Your entire point is nonsense. You're saying legal hits should be frowned upon because, why, don't play hard where you have the option not to? What the hell is the point of hitting anyone then?
I want everyone on my team to try to "kill" people, within the rules. I want them to hit to hurt (not injure, but hurt) in every game. I want those hits to be as hard as possible. That is a big part of what makes hockey hockey, and what's great about the sport. Playing monday morning QB and saying "oh he should've skated up and dug the puck out of his skates and MAGIC! 3 on 1!" is just... it's unbelievable that you can even justify making a statement that ridiculous. How about "He tries to dig the puck out, it ends up staying in and winds up being a scoring chance for the Rangers"? If I'm the coach and I see Phaneuf, my best, most physical defenseman who is known for running people over, start letting up, I'm cutting his minutes because that makes him a less effective player.
I think you need to stand back and look at what you're writing because it's just absurd. I know a habs fan who similarly yells for a suspension every time everyone gets injured on the basis of "protecting the players" and I fucking hate, hate HATE that attitude. If things go that way hockey sucks a lot more than it does now.
A Canucks blogger recently lamented on Puck Daddy that the best rivalry in the NHL right now, the Canucks and Blackhawks, was being split up. He was instantly set upon by many an eastern conference hockey fan scoffing at the notion that this was anywhere close to true. So, I pose the question: what are the top 5 rivalries in the league?
1. Montreal - Boston
2. Pittsburgh - Washington
3. Vancouver - Chicago
4. Detroit - San Jose
5. ... I'm out. Maybe Buffalo - Philadelphia? Maybe still Calgary - Edmonton even though they both suck just because it's the only thing left to be excited about?
