Big news of the day from Bob McKenzie: Justin Schultz of the Wisconsin Badgers has officially quit school, thereby exploiting a CBA loophole that will make him a UFA on July 1st. Every team in the league will try to sign the guy. Where does he go? Front runners appear to be Edmonton, Vancouver, NYR and Philly. And just to bring this thread full circle, there has never been a better time for this:
LOL @ Anaheim.
PS - ON3PSkis on xbox live. I used to play all head-to-head, but play almost exclusively EASHL these days.
So you control the whole club? I don't play single player NHL, so I don't know how similar the current "be a GM" mode is to that but it sounds pretty different.
Most people in NHL play in the EASHL, which is essentially you build your own players - a RW, a LW, a C, a D and a Goalie, by assigning stat points. You get a fixed number of stat points and get more as you play. Then you play drop in where you select one position - so if I pick RW for a particular game, I'll control my RW player for that game. So you only actually control one guy. You can buy cards that boost your stats in a particular slot i.e. +5 acceleration, +3 wrist shot accuracy, etc. You can make a club and play other clubs if you don't want to play drop in, which is generally better because drop in can be a shitshow (i.e. defensemen who want to rush up the ice all the time resulting in constant odd-man rushes the other way).
I'm usually LW but also play some RW - my dudes are identical power forwards, only difference is what hand they shoot with.
Man how you gonna say Edmonton ain't got not heart? Also rumour has it they may be looking to trade down despite denials. If they get Schultz (and Bob Mac thinks they're the front-runner), and then trade down to 5th or 6th to grab Griffin Reinhardt, they'd be on the right track I think. I just seem to have less faith in Devyn Dubnyk than Oilers management.
Good recent jokes about Edmonton from Downgoesbrown re the WHC -
The Czechs enter the tournament unable to ice a single NHL-quality defenseman or netminder, which is concerning, or as Ales Hemsky calls it, "business as usual".
And my favourite thing I've heard this week:
The team's front office is using the World Championships to scout blueline prospect Ryan Murray, which is smart since if there's one crucial skill for a future Oiler it's the ability to take part in the World Championships.
