Computer Question (Video Editing Specific)

Okay, so my computer is 4 years old now and I know I need to upgrade cause none of my videos will render any more. At least halfway through they fart out and tell me that I need to close some programs to make more memory available. Little does my computer know, I've gone through and closed everything that isn't required in the rendering process. Literally. Searched for spyware dozens of times and this is as good as it gets. With that said, to those of you who are editing higher res shots from HD cams and camcorders like a 7D or HVX, how much ram do you have on your computer? And what kind of processor? Im trying to figure out how far I need to upgrade

Depending on your current specs, you may need to upgrade to a new computer to keep away from compatibility problems.

oh well for sure im planning on upgrading to a new comp. pretty sure im going to move from PC to mac, but within those lines Im curious how far up i need to go. processor and ram wise that is. hard drives arent really a huge concern. you can always move files around with a big external

Intel i7 960 3.2 gHz Quad Core Processor
8gb ddr3 1333 RAM
HD Radeon 5770 GPU
750 watt PSU
Samsung Spinpoint 1tb HDD
built my own computer^ I'd highly suggest doing it! I run mac osx without any trouble and edit using FCP

Any chance you're using Sony Vegas?

that i am. and ya i agree that one should edit off of an internal hard drive. most standard drives are like 250-500G though and thats more than enough to store your everyday docs plus whatever project you may be working on. theres no real need for a 1T+ internal HD
