Gopro chest mount

so i love my gopro but as you can imagine i feel like a tool wearing it sometimes so i figured the chest mount would be a good way to record with it in a less ostentatious way, plus i think itd be better for cliff jumping etc during the summer. anyone wanna give me a review of it? is it worth buying? comfy? should i make one instead? etc

oh also, IMPORTANT: my buddy's about to get the 3d system so we can join forces and shoot 3d (you guys only shoot in 2d? that's so gay). does the regular chest mount work with the 3d housing too?

i got it, its meh.... honestly. when your skiing you see your arms alot. it is comfy though, dont really notice it. and even though i tighten it when i land the gopro flops down facing my skis. i like it for other stuff though.

definitely the most comfortable of all the mounts, but also produces the worst footage.

carry a small phillips head screwdriver with you. a must for any go pro mount.

Chest mount POV ski videos are terrible in my opinion. It looks like the skier is tailgunning everything.

in regards to cliff jumping, my buddy and I were hitting a 60 footer last year into one of our local lakes and he tried the jump with the chest mount and he ended up splitting open his eye/forehead because as soon as he hit the water, the gopro came up and hit him in the face. just a warning...

cliff jumping with that thing on your chest sounds like a very stupid idea... the straps aren't that impressive to being with.

i use the chestie for mtb and it's sick except it's a bit shaky. i doubt you'd have any real use for a chestie that won't make your footage look terrible.

Towards the end there's two shot of GoPro headstrap. I think that cliff was about 35 feet and I had no problem using it (doing no big tricks w/ it fully tightened)

But we did try some 50-55 feet cliffs with the GoPro strap, and the strap came completely of once and the camera got flimsy. I don't have any footage but we found of that those 50-55 ft. cliffs are fine using the headstrap if you hold on to it at the end.

for cliff jumping I have it in my hand. stick you arm out and it films you and your friend or the drop. just come up with your own safety system so if you were to let go it doesn't disappear on you

awesome for jumping off cliffs and bridges in the summer.
the head strap mount would be cool if it didn't immediately come off when you hit the water.

i like the chest mount for certain shots, but a lot of skiers rotate their upper body a lot throughout turns which makes the footage drift from side to side as they turn.

like every other gopro mount, it should be used tastefully in the way that makes the shot look the best. (i suck at this)

thanks a lot for all the good replies! it's disappointing to hear that it's not a great angle too often but not surprising either. i do have the headband one which i'll use within reason of course, but yeah for bigger drops we'll just have to do hand held follows, which i was the most excited for anyway. i'll either need to attach something to make it float, or tie it to a wrist

anybody use this for slalom skiing? thinking about throwing down the cash for a chest mount, but with slalom theres a lot of tug and pull with the rope, not to mention high speeds. wonder how it would look

every time i drop a big cliff my knees would come into the frame and it would look as if i'd wash out and recover on a very sketchy way while helmet shots would just look fine ....

although i still feel like it's worth having, maybe not for skiing shots, but definately for other applications ....

I used the chest mount for most of this past season and my knees did come into the shot a lot. personally though, i like it more than the helmet mount... yep.

You might get in the way of it easily, I saw a vid of a guy hitting jumps in Whis(just straight airing) but his knees would come up and block the shot or you could see his knees and it looked kinda lame

Hijacking. My GOPRO got delivered today. I soon realized the mermory cards i have lying about were to big. Had a quick look on the interwebs and found the sandisk 8GB extreme HD video SDHC memory card for a barging price of 14.79.

Looking for a barging on the chest mount now.

It's great for skiing. I wore it all last winter. You don't notice it at all and the footage looks sick as it picks up your arms as well. Get one.

i dont know how often you find bargains on gopro products.. i havent looked around much though. 40 bucks aint bad for a chest mount tho, i might get it just in case it's handy sometimes

that's one of the many reasons gopro deserves all the money they must be raking in.. reasonable prices. smash the housing, 40 bucks, smash the lens, 20 bucks. very cool

The Chesty is really good for skiing pow lines where the snow can give the face-shot sensation to the camera. It doesn't do so well when you're skiing rougher snow, or taking airs, and it does have the tendency to make you look back seat if it's not angled right.

We use the Chesty about 50% of the time we're out filming with it and the sticky helmet mount the rest of the time. We've never had issues with the camera falling off either of those mounts the way the head strap can.

Wrist and pole mounts are awesome for summer-time fun (either the ones you buy or something improvised)

how is that even possible ? if anything it should be the other way around, 1080 is like a 120° angle and 960/720-30/720-60 is 170° so those should have more "arm" or knee in it ....

1080/120° however is too narrow imho ....

I took a tomahawk this spring with my Go Pro on my helmet mount and lost it. The mount was intact on my helmet, the go pro was missing. 3 of us dug around for a few hours and ski patrol even brought in a Recco transmitter to help look for it. No luck, it is either super deep or got catapulted by my tumble. I would really like to see that footage.

Also, when I was in Jackson, someone slammed the chairlift bar into my helmet, knocking the go-pro and mount off my helmet. Luckily I caught it.

That sucks. Losing the footage is almost worse than losing the camera.

They should make some sort of tether you could hook onto your coat in case your mount breaks, or you drop it off the lift or something.

Ya, it'd be funny to see that footage online someday. I'd like to see the wreck footage. Im sure someone will find it eventually.

Next go pro Im going to design some sort of tether system... even if its a strand of fluorescent string that will tail out behind it as it goes.

Obviously the chest-strap will stay on better than the helmet strap. But I lost my GoPro that was attached to my helmet with the adhesive mount in a crash that wasn't even that bad. I just use the helmet strap now, I have a black helmet and I just stick a little black duct tape on their (you can't even notice it) and no problems. So in my experience headstrap > adhesive helmet mounts.

i have an adhesive mount on my helmet for 2 years now, i've had several bad head-plants on an airbag while filming, several tomahawks in the powder and some gnarly crashes on hardpack, and the mount is still going strong !

did you clean/degrease your helmet before applying the mount at roomtemperature and waiting 1 day before using it ?

the chestmount looks especially weird when youre skiing switch. and the headmount doesnt really bother me that much. the only time i notice it is when im hiking something and my goggles arent there to support the extra weight of the helmet

If you have a helmet with a goggle clip you can put your helmet strap mount through that to help keep it on it a wreck too.

just get some duct tape and tape it to your jacket and leash it to your zip for backup, thats what i did for a couple days, got some footage...

the camera comes with a rubber stopper for helmet mounting but no one uses them and then when they lose their camera they act like nothing could have been done but if you use it then the camera never falls off

even though the knees get in the shot sometimes, you can see the knees, more of your arms/pole planting and gives you more of a feel of the pov - instead of the helmet mount, which to me just seams like a floating camera going down the mountain.

that - and with the chest mount you can always see what angle the camera is at so you don't have a full day's of footage pointing down at your skis or up at the sky.

besides, who wants a silly cam sticking up on your head?
