Depends on a bunch of things. Do you want a camcorder DSLR or point and shoot. If you want a DSLR do you want it strictly for stills or will you be doing allot of filming too. What have you looked at?
Nikon D5000 if you want photo & video
Nikon D80 if you want photo
Canon HV20/30/40 If you just want video
GoPro 1080p if you want it to double at a helmet cam
please don't blindly jump into dslrs. you're going to get very frustrated if you don't know what you're doing and spend a lot more than 500 for a usable video setup. that being said, they're great cameras and they can produce great videos. assuming you don't know much about cameras, get a gopro or hv30. but fill out the sticky about buying a camera for us
$500, I would go for the hv30/hv40. They are great for the price.
Don't go with the D5000. You won't be happy with it. *IF you can save up a bit more, you can roll with the t2i and be super stoked. It's a great cam to learn the basics as long as you have the patience.
