Replying to New Macbook Pro

Just got my hands on a new 15 inch macbook pro for graduation. Overall, the computer is pretty nice but where can i upload some new software for it or what is good to have with it?

The programs look pretty basic in my opinion, or at least i was expecting more. I used mac all throughout high-school and i thought the pro was supposed to be better, as of right now i notice absolutely no difference exempting the keyboard lights.
