Long Essay for College

For college applications what did you guys write about for your long essay topics? I am currently working on mine and can't decide what i want to do for a topic. I was thinking about wilderness pollution, hiking, climbing or skiing. I can't get started.

Anyone care to help?

i'm at college, but in europe we don't need to write essay to get admitted, so should it be a scientific essay or just a free essay that expresses your own thoughts?


for the stuff you mentioned, maybe write about the history and progression/future of skiing/climbing,

or write about the effects of global change on our sports and how we evolve to eco-minded sporters (ie.summit foundation, use of bio-diesel, etc.)

or about mountains, look up how your home mountain was formed, in my first year at college i had to make a powerpoint about the alpine orogenesis, kinda cool if you're interested in geology :)



or should the essay be inspired by what you want to study? (ie. engineer, science, econ, psychol, etc.)

Whatever you write about make sure whoever is reading it is able to get to know you personally through the essay. You don't want them reading about the cool tricks you can do skiing and how much you love it. It doesn't mean you can't talk about an activity you really like to do, just make sure they are able to get to know you in a way that they can't through the rest of your application (tests scores, grades, sports, activities, etc).

You can write about any of those topics, but relate to an event in your life that made you care about one of the listed topics. And then describe how you can continue to be passionate at that topic at the college.

example (it's been awhile since I've done this):
Insert/describe most prominent ski memory (a good hook), skiing got me outdoors, made me love nature, I now want to preserve that nature, that's why I want to study __________ at _________ college, In high school I did this_______, ________ college has ____, ____, ____ which will help me achieve my goals so others can experience pristine nature like me.

Ask your teacher(s) to look over it.

write about a personel experience, that you know a lot about. Try to make it unique and something that you care about, as the college will realize that you care about what you're writing. It doesn't have to be long, as I did this last year, making it short and simple is the best way to go. If you have a cool, and unique story about skiing definitely write about that.

Unless you really want to piss off admissions counselors don't make it more than 2 pages double spaced. Edit it quite a bit and take out unnecessary details, like the kid above me said, KEEP IT SIMPLE.

I wrote about my brother, special_k10101 on NS.

He was and still is super influential to me. I wrote about experiences that we've shared together and how I've become a stronger person because of him. Ryan, if you read this... ♥ ;)

Best of luck with your applications man! Such a stressful couple months, but once you get accepted to a bunch of schools it's so worth it. I leave for Santa Clara in 8 days. Pumped!

no shit i can. i just need a good spark to get me thinking about it and i need to make a good interesting connection about my two loves and how i think about physics when i ski....wait i think i just thought up my start to my essy. brb haha i got it!

i found a book i'd written in 2nd grade about my opinions on adults and i wrote an essay comparing myself now to my 6 year old's preconceptions as i start to grow up and become an adult
