Do we have any on NS??

And of course, what do you play, and when did you start?




I play the viola, although i would like to try to learn the cello as well.
I started the viola in maybe 2nd grade? Somewhere around there. I played the piano before that too

There is no difference. The violin just looks smaller because the violinist's head is so much bigger.

--How many second violinists does it take to change a light bulb?



None. They can't get up that high!

I started violin when I was about five, then last year I switched over to viola.

Do you play in an orchestra?

Good stuff. I learned to play bass as well, but not to the caliber of my violin or viola playing.

But right now I'm in the Young Peoples Symphony Orchestra (Berkeley), and used to be in the Oakland Youth Orchestra. Hopefully come next summer I'll try out for the San Francisco Youth Orchestra.

I played the violin since I was 4. Viola since I was 15. I taught myself to read bass clef and filled in for the stand up bass player for a concert once? Same year as when I picked up the viola, that was also to fill in for someone.

Orchestra became boring for me after a while...if you're in it now stick with it it's worth it. I wish I still had time to practice regularly.

lead mothafuckin trumpet, bitches. that's right, i was that guy that played solo in front of the school at assemblies n shit, or had the epic high notes in the band pieces.
i was good at that shit.

i play piano too. 5 years classical experience.

Also, I play the oboe.
I started in 4th grade. I sucked until 7th grade when i started taking private lessons. IN 8th grade I auditioned for a local performing arts high school and got in. 9th grade I was 2n chair in concert band. 10th I was second chair in concert band and first chair in orchestra. That year the orchestra played my favorite piece ever: Firebird suite. It was awesome. 11th (current) I am second chair in concert band and second chair in orchestra. Next year, for my senior project I'll be learning the cello from scratch and playing with the orchestra on it.

7th-9th grade I played marimba and tenors in marching band.

I learned saxophone this year from scratch (exact same fingerings as oboe) and now play with my schools jazz ensemble.

Also took piano lessons for 6 years.

miss orchestra :(

i played first violin first chair, and composed/performed a song.

did up until 7th grade when we got a new teacher, and she tried to get me too learn sheet music or she wouldnt let me play, so i quit.

I played violin. Started when I was 7-16.

Played in two orchestras (First chair in one), string orchestra and a string quartet (only for a year).

I miss, I used to really enjoy it until I ended up not having enough time to practice a couple of hours a night. Thinking of picking it back up though.

And out of orchestra I played the piano.

here's a joke.

I used to date a french horn player. I didn't know she was a french horn player until we first kissed, and she stuck her hand up my butt.

I also used to date a cellist. I knew she was a cellist but it soon became very apparent, i mean, she would play with your instrument whenever you put it between her legs.

i play violin yo. i fuckin hate it. my music teacher is nuts as fuck.
been playing since grade 9, now im in grade 10 and i just played billie jean for my last exam today.

he always makes us play really hard shit, especially for exams(not talking about billie jean) and he's super serious about EVERYTHING. he always says shit like if you don't practice THEN YOU HAVE NO INTEGRITY!
so im quitting, so long to my highest mark in school.

My dad was the orchestra teacher for our school district and so I joined orchestra in fifth grade and have played cello ever since. I was first chair junior and senior years in high school. Now i mostly just play bass guitar though.

8 years on violin, was in the local youth orchestra, then i quit the violin.

soloed with that same orchestra the year afterwards as a pianist.

Lol good stuff. I play viola, have been since 3rd grade. toured in austria and germany with my orchestra a few years back, but now i'm "unemployed" since my high school orchestra's schedule sucks dick and i can't play for them

No way! I play the viola too! My orchestra just started rehearsing for the 4th and I'm so pumped to play the 1812 Overture... it's definitely one of my favorite pieces! I was going to major in viola performance as of a couple years ago, but then I decided on engineering... I'm still thinking about doing a music minor, but it'll probably be impossible.

I've played the clarinet since 6th grade and saxophone since 7th and I'm going into my second year as a music major at UBC. So hopefully if I have a good audition I'll be in the UBC Symphony Orchestra, and if not I guess I'll just settle on Wind Ensemble.

played violin for 13 years. Did about 10 years of orchestral music, then last 3 years of Cape Breton fiddle. then broke my left collar bone, had surgery and a plate in it for over a year and couldn't play so picked up mandolin instead. got the plate out this last summer and have yet to play again.
