All these guys that think they're making the world a better place by making people delete their pictures or confiscate their camera's - public safety, my ass. Bush, you're an asshole.
That's what I do. But, rather than throw my rights in their face I usually just walk away.
Seriously, shoot until you get told not to. No matter where you are, there are chances that you will get approached. You could be in a public park or an airport, and it's all the same.
^Airports are public space, but Aircraft and TSA security checkpoints are private. I was filming some time-lapse stuff on Chicago's CTA subway system and was approached by security accusing me of trespassing, they asked me to delete what I had shot and that CTA would prosecute if they found any of my stuff online or broadcast. I figured it was in my best intentions to look up the laws so I would be prepared for next time... although I do think the best way to go about it is to be polite and ask the accuser's exactly what laws you are breaking, and see if they have a valid reason.
Please do this first. Don't go shoving up the laws in the accuser's face. Even if they are wrong, be polite and calm because being demanding and disrespectful won't get you anywhere.
