Convincing the Parents

Well Media and Arts this is the first time I'm coming to you for specific help, hopefully you can aid me in my quest for a camera. Basically this is my situation, I'm signed up for a photography class in August, the class will provide cameras for us to use while I'm at the camp, however I still want my own camera. My parents are pretty tough to crack so I decided to make an Excel Spreadsheet comparing different cameras and specs because I figure it's a good way to show my parents I'm dedicated to this whole ordeal and that I know what I'm doing. They don't want to drop $500-$700 on a camera without knowing all the details. This is where my problem arises, I have no idea what specs. to include in the spreadsheet. I know the basic factors like iso, aperture, shutter speed, mp, but I need to know what's really important to include and research. I'm pretty much looking for a list, and any help is appreciated. If you guys have any other good ideas please feel free to inform me.

too bad they don't matter too much unless you plan on doing madd cropping or blowing up huge prints, but a factor nonetheless i suppose

That's what most people look at, so it's good to add in a comparison, especially trying to convince someone. Yes, they dont really matter all that much, but in his case, add them.

meh, i shoot at medium quality anyways cause its faster to edit/takes less space up. i think your fine above 10, especially for internet purposes. and to evan, if you're just looking to shoot photos, check out a canon xsi or something, not bad for a beginner and pretty cheap

Might make an argument like this. Why would I go to photography camp and not be able to practice what I learned afterwards. Athletes don't go to summer camp and stop playing/competing after they go to camp.

It's great to hear that you're interested in photography, and committed enough to make an excel sheet for your parents. In all honesty, if the camp you're going to provides you with cameras, wait to purchase one until after camp. There's no sense in purchasing one, getting there, and finding out you like one that they had there more.

In respect to categories. MP's are the posterchild for brands. 2-3MP will show very little to nothing on a large print, let alone a computer screen. Jumping from 10 to 15 or 20 is a different story. Look into if you're wanting a consumer body, or a prosumer body that will be made of a more durable material and be more okay with dealing with light rain etc. Are you wanting high fps? Things like that.

Because there's a huge advantage of having a very small camera that produces very good quality that you can literally always have in your pocket, vs a large camera that produces excellent quality that you will only sometimes carry. I have shot my S95 way more than my D700 since I got it.

For this kid's purposes, his school is going to let him use good gear. Get a high quality compact. If I was back in college again I'd shoot an S90 for all available light shots just to prove a point.
