DLSR Editing/Converting Help

Hey NS,
I recently found out that final cut express is meant for film/tape cameras. Well, good thing it's my friends copy...haha.
Anyways, I have a nikon d5100, which I adore for photography. I want to start making HD edits with final cut but not sure have to keep the good quality when editing/exporting with final cut express...
Is there such thing as a cable to plug into the DSLR to make it act like a tape/film camera? I don't thin so but I could be wrong..
Anyways, I'm really looking for answers to keep the quality when using MOV files in final cut express. Perhaps avoid rendering but I can endure that. I can't endure shitty quality.

Final cut express 4?

Look up log and transfer tutorials on youtube or google.

if he has express he most likely wont have ProRes422 as thats a pro codec, so use Apple intermediate codec. works just as well.

yea i was a little confused there too....

if it's a newer version of fce, there's no way apple didn't anticipate that tons of DSLR filmers would be using it

he just said that that was the reason why the quality was bad for me when exporting...

I'm still trying to figure this shit out haha

FCE does tent to like dv cameras over anything. 
Pro res also does not work.
The best way is to use mpeg stream clip to apple intermedic codec 720 30p.

When I put the mov clip in the timeline and play it, the quality is so good. It's after I export it when the crappy quality occurs. I tried eheath's setting, any other pointers or would the converter fix this?

That has happened to me a few times, with a few possible solutions.

1. When you upload it, it will look fine. I've had videos I've exported from FCP that look choppy until I upload them.

2. Check your export settings. Having low quality video or even a non-native frame rate could be responsible for the shitty quality.
