the colors you see in the photo you stare at are the exact opposite colors (complimentary colors) from the real photograph's colors. when you stare at it and look at a neutral photo or background i.e. black and white castle photo your eyes react and show the after image which replaces the black and white with the real colors. look at this illusion itll make more sense. the american flag pictured is the negative and after staring at it and the background goes white you see the correct colors. http://www.illusion-optical.com/Optical-Illusions/AfterImage.php

I think you did it wrong.  the pic appears fully colored when it switches b/w.  think it may have something to do with how the eye preceives pictures and how our brain interprets it.  As in the colors separate and also when you stare at a picture the image burns into your retina temporarily.   thus how the blotchy picture you stare at turns into Jesus when you look at your wall for that one optical illusion.  Knowing all the information about optical illusions just ruins it though.  I would prefer to think it works by magic....

its because the rods in your eyes that are looking at the complimentary colors become fatigued so then when you see the b/w image, you eyes see the complimentary colors of what was displayed before, showing a full color picture. Quite simple, but cool.

In that case I found how to master it. You need to be not sober.
