Basically, the issue is we have been running the store from Canada. Its much more expensive to ship from Canada, but we used to be able to make up the difference with the exchange rate. However, with the collapse of the USD that difference was no longer there and the cost of shipping increased for you the customer.
We began to receive so many complaints, and frankly realized how ridiculous the costs got.
The decision was made to move operations of the store into the USA, but just note that this isn't a tiny change. We're currently working on spinning up a solution over there so that our american customers (who make up about 75% of the store's business) have better shipping options. It will not affect Canadian customers, as its actually cheaper to ship into Canada from the USA than it is Canada-Canada most times (go figure). Our European customers note we haven't forgotten about you but frankly we just don't have a good idea for how to handle this yet.
Anyways, your patience is as always appreciated. We'll get something new in place, and make sure that it works for our customers, so you guys can stop paying so much money to rock the Newschoolers gear you want!
I can't promise that it will be quick to get up and running again, but I do promise that once we do it will be a good solution that works for the majority of NSers.
Well it was way too impractical and out of the question at the time. Remember, the American dollar has gone from being worth 46% MORE than the Canadian dollar to 5% LESS. At one point it even got so bad that the USD was almost 8% lower than the Canadian Dollar.
That's a 50% increase in store costs, which changes the rules a bit. That tends to take things which used to be impractical and make them practical again.
As well, its only recently that Newschoolers is owned by a company that does a ton of magazine distribution and therefore has experience in this and a base of operations in the states.
Back when we used to talk about this we would have had to be opening a warehouse in the states which would have had 50% higher costs than what we were running here. That IS impractical.
Best I can give you is that we're hoping to have something running by the absolute latest next winter. Ideally its much quicker than that, but its a big change so I'm really not 100% sure.
