Mountain Bike Question

I don't know much about down hilling and im starting to get into it this summer.

Everyone I see doing it has a full face helmet. It must be necessary if everyone has one, but im just wondering what kinds people use. I have a Smith Troy Lee full face that I use for skiing sometimes. Would that work? Or should I get a legit one?

my guess is full faced helmets have better protection of ur face and teeth just think of it this way. do u want to be bruised and battered all over ur face or do u want a nice beautiful face with all ur real teeth

You pretty much have to have a full face helmet for DH, they are mandatory for DH racing.
If you want to get a new lid, go to http://www.chainreactioncycles.com . Most of the 661 stuff is pretty accurate on headsizes.

If you're into gnarly stuff, I'd suggest some body armour, Fox launch suit is the best i've come across in terms of value.

The Troy lee design helmets are also DH helmets, I have one that I use and I like it a lot

Your helmet is legit, but I'm guessing if it is made for skiing it will not be as well ventilated or light as a mtb one. If you dont have the cash for a new one it will work, but you will be sweating your brain out. keep an eye out on chainlove.com, I've seen them pop up on there all the time.

I would %100 recommend getting a full face just because it is an intense sport in the scence that your recklessly speeding through the forest, but after that everything up to you. If i were you i'd look into buying some shin pads, or at least knee/ half shin, but if you just looking to cruise and flow the trails, maybe catch a little air the full body armor/ neckbrace arnt going to be needed. But this all depends where your riding and how the trails are.

Oh yeah, shin pads are DEFINITELY necessary too. I remember when I used to freeride and downhill more, my shins often resembled raw hamburger. If you are cheap or broke, even some old soccer shinguards are better than nothing.

god summer sure is coming, out of all the responses, only like two responded to the actual question posed in the thread. i guess i'll be number three: that helmet will have sufficient protection, but might be a little warm. go ride with it one day and if you can't handle the heat, then invest in a DH-specific one. if it works, stay on the cheap and use that.

I am a downhiller and a dirt biker and I have seen my fair share of helemt fails...

Anyhow, I would recommend getting a DOT or even snell approved helemt. I know most mtb helmets arent, but its a good idea. I know a guy who died because he his full face straight shattered. Troy Lee is a sweet company, and so is sixsixone. Theres my 5 cents.
