Peace Pipe Jam Critique

I did a little filming at the peace pipe jam. i then did a quick little edit and im looking for suggestions on how to hone my skillzz. I realize some people dont like slo mo, but i thought it worked with the song.

The one thing i am unsure of how to fix is the obvious aperture change during shots. i realize it is necessary but is there any way to dull the sharpness of the changes? It is painfully obvious in some shots.
Shot with: t2i, sigma 10-20mm and 50mm 1.8f

Nice. I was waiting for edits to drop from this. I REALLY wanted to go and film as well, but I ended up getting my ACL surgery a few days ago. Looked like a really good time. Sad I had to miss out this year.

I really like your edit. The slow-mo didn't bother me at all. I think you are right that it is necessary for the song. The song itself was was a refreshing choice. It gave the edit a wholesome vibe of friends just having a good time enjoying the camaraderie, skiing, and gorgeous summer weather. Which is a perfect feel for a PPJ edit, 'cause thats what its all about. You did a good job of choosing a few different subtle transitions, and pretty much all of your cuts were spot on. One or two shots could have been panned a bit smoother, but I thought most of them were composed pretty well. You cut the subjects head off a few times, but it didn't really ruin the shots.

Did you color-grade it at all? The colors looked good, but it looks like it could have benefited from just stretching the contrast a little bit, and performing a color-match. This would have also helped with the mid-shot aperture changes you asked about.

Overall, very enjoyable, feel good edit. Just wondering, what did you use to edit it?

Thanks for the kind words. I edit with FCP. Im still very new to fcp and im stil getting used to the differences between it and vegas. I color corrected a few shots but it was only to lighten them up a little. Watching it again i defiantly agree with you, my contrast could have been a little sharper. Ill talke that into account next edit.

NP man. I am relatively new to Final Cut Studio as well. I have been laid up for a few days so I have been spending a lot of time watching tutorials and practicing. This is a good set of tutorials that will teach you, among other things, how to use the luma curve in color to stretch contrast:


It is a very simple adjustment to make, and makes a very noticeable difference. I think he describes it in the video as similar to wiping a layer of grime off of your lens. Also, google around for tutorials on color matching. In fact, I think there was a really good thread on it on here not too long ago. I'll see if I can dig it up for you, since I don't have many better things to do.

throw some color correction on that bitch and youll be golden and this has nothing to do with the quality of the video but personally i dont like the song very much:P nice job tho, props man
