The String Theory

Anyone familiar with this concept? Basically, it can be called the theory of everything becuase it unifies both gravitational relativitey and quantum mechanics.
The premise of it is that sub atomic particles are actually made up of close loop bands of energy that are billions of times smaller than an entire atom. And these 'string' exsist within 6 dimensions plus our visible 3 dimensions and time. The totall number of dimensions that the sting theory predicts is 11. On top of that, sting theory also predicts the untire universe may be one out of an infinite number of universes with prehaps different laws of phyical constants. The weird thing is that each universe may only be milimeters from the next. Including ours. And we cannot travel or see the next universe because our 'strings' are attached to our universal membrane which is like a huge blanket. The only thing that can is subatomic particles called gravitons. We MAY be able to see this is particle accelorators. When two atoms are smashed they may create gravitons which MAY vanish from our own universe into a higher dimension. Meaning that is is absolutley gone.
It really is the craziest thing Ive ever heard.

It's a really new concept. Quite revolutionary, but not solidified. Simply due to the fact that we can't see them, and our only data is inferences drawn from the behavior of sub-atomic and atomic particles.

The idea of 11 dimensions is baffling. 4 would seem sufficient. In my mind length, width, depth, and time comprise everything a human can imagine.

If the String Theory is proven. It will indeed link both Theories of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. Although Stanford is well on their way to proving ToR with Gravity Probe B. Their data may yeild interesting results to String theorists.

But that's just a theory... are there any facts to back it up? I might as well theorize that my dick is the center of the universe because a theory, in my opinion, does not have much credibility if there are not tangible facts backing it up.

its not just A theory, it has mathematics to porve some aspect and prehaps we can see the effects in subatomic particles with things like gravitons, and supersymety. It can also explain things like black holes and worm holes

Yes, string theory has been explored greatly by Brian Greene, the man who wrote the book ('The Elegent Universe') which NOVA based the program on. He also hosted the show I believe. I was a excellent program and I highly suggest anyone interested in the subject see it. However, if your weird and study a lot of physics it can seem kind of basic. Brian Greene has a new book out that is layed out in the same format as The Elegent universe and seems pretty good.

All of those theories are formulated based on mathematics. If that type of stuff is interesting to you guys, you should pick up a copy of 'The Brief History of Time' by Stephen Hawkings. It is one of my favorite books and is written by the a guy who can't even walk or talk under his own power.

Well, the way the extra dimensions may be imagined such as in the Elegant Universe is that its like being on TV. You may have 3 dimensions, and if you were able to walk out of the TV screen, thats itself is another dimension. Or something like that, its all to confusing.

well, no, becuase atoms and gravitons may be made up of two differnt types of strings, atoms are made up of stings that are attached to our own universal membrane. And graviton strings are closed circles, which might give them free range of movement to other places.

Strings arent made up pf anythign, theyre just loops of energy.

The really cool thing explained in that show is the the entire universe is based on chance. They used the example of standing and pushing on a wall. If you keep standing and pushing on a wall, there is a chance you will go through it. Its so small, however, that you would have to keep pushing for nearly eternity until you go through it.

yeah i read about that in scientific american. there was also this other universe theory article about the infinite box theory, where the universe is supposedly finite, but it replicates based on reflections and stuff. i don't know it's really weird.

I've heard of the string theory, but I don't know enough about it to make insightful comments about it. Physics is damn cool, and you people who say 'its just a theory' and 'they have no evidence' should pull your heads out of your asses and get educated.

You might have heard of Einstein's twin paradox, it goes something like this... there are a set of twins, when they're 20 years old, one leaves earth and rips around in a rocket at 90% the speed of light, and when he gets back he's 30 years old and his twin that was stuck on earth is 60. It may sound like a pile of crazy physics shit, but they can demonstrate it experimentally by measuring muon decay.

Then in quantum mechanics, they say that you can never tell where a particle is, it pretty much randomly appears and dissapears. But sometimes it can appear where classical mechanics said it couldn't be. Its called the infinite square well.

So I dont know why I'm telling all this, but physics has some pretty mind boggling ideas, and people brush them off as bullshit theories. Well if these bullshit theories didn't work we wouldn't have computers, florescent lights, vcr's, and all sorts of stuff.

Physics is cool. Its also very very hard to really understand.

ever heard of observer created reality? basically if you look for it you'll find it. its why light can be seen as both a particle and a wave. if your looking for a particle thats what ur evidence will show and if you're looking for a wave then thats what'll happen.

i havnt heard of the entire theory but i have heard of the theory of multiple universes which are contained in a multi verse as well as the possibility of completly different dimentions and laws of physics. of coarse this is all very hard to prove because we are working with an already 'perfect' system of our own and we as humans can simplynot comprehend these other laws and dimentions. interesting stuff. nice to have have some pertinent discussions on NS for once.

strings are loops of vibrating energy, the are inside these balls (they might be called quarks) that are inside protons and neutrons. the vibrating strings come in different vibration which create all these crazy particles (omega, b, 1...etc). these particles then make up the 3 quantum mechanical forces (strong, weak and electromagnatism). also, particles, such as omega, beta or photons, that are in light or whatever else, jump back and forth between matter than light reaches. the photons jumping back and forth actually start to pull the to objects together, therefore creating gravity. the only way i could think of to test this new theory would be to enforce gravity on light and bend a stream of photons.
