i think everyone forgets that... every fucking time. also due the fact that he beat testicle/lung/brain cancer during his career which, even through the use of performance enhancers (that never were detected), is still the most impressive feat of human performance in competition.

Road bike racing is pretty much the most doped out sport there is. If you don't dope, you don't win, and that's how it is— you'd have to be some seriously motherfucking badass robot energizer bunny to win without doping. The whole field does it, and there's no getting away from it.

Doping or not, Lance has overcome a shitload of stuff to get to where he is, and he's an icon all over the place. And just so you know: Lance was an absolute BAMF before he started doping, too— as a teenager he rose up through the ranks incredibly fast. The dude was never slow to begin with. Doping just leveled the playing field for him, as it does for every racing hopeful.

And as long as he acknowledges it and apologizes, America will love him anyway. That's just how it is, across all boards.

road racing the most tested sport out there. there's been way too many scandals for a sport with so much pride. due to it's insanely strict drug testing, road racing is one of the cleanest sports out there to this day.

kinda breaks my heart. WHen i was little i always saw tyler as the most sacrificial guy... always worked his ass off for lance so he could win, then got almost no glory.

Yeah, road racing is the most tested sport out there. And the athletes and team managers have come up with the most creative ways of doping. I'll let you in on a little secret, that isn't much of a secret. When roadies dope, they do it long before a race.

Jump get your blood pumped full of all the right stuff to make it as efficient as possible, get the levels of illegal substances to have in your blood up to just below the minimum... and then draw some of that blood out of your system.

Now, you come to the race. Your blood is just below the legal limits again, because you've repeated the process. (legal according to the testing standards, not actual laws). Ride, keep riding. You've been charging along, but as you ride a lot over many days, like in the Tour de France, your blood becomes less efficient at carrying oxygen to your muscles as the levels of those chemicals get lower and lower.

BUT WAIT! You have baggies filled with healthy, perfect 100% blood from a few weeks ago! And it's half way through the Tour! Why don't you have a transfusion?

Guess what, those transfusions are rocket fuel. You come back at pretty much the same level as you began with, half way through the Tour. And so it goes.


Of course this is against the rules, but it's difficult to get caught. One guy not terribly long ago (don't remember who or exactly when) was caught because he tried to do it himself, without a team manager working out the details— and instead of using the appropriate bags, he just used zip-locs or some equivalent. Well, when they tested him mid-race, guess what they found in his blood stream? Chemicals that would never have been in his blood had it not been kept in a zip-loc for some time. Another guy was caught when they lowered the legal limits just before a race— he registered just above the legal limits.



At the same time as road racing is the most tested sport... it's got some clever fuckers working it out. Doping is still very much a prevalent issue... why do you think Lance didn't race in the Olympics, because he was working on his charities and such? It's because the Olympic testing is way, way more stringent than most other races. People who come out clean for the Tour, etc. were caught and disqualified from the Olympics if they weren't careful. And they had many, many months notice before the Olympics to make sure they were below the legal limits.

He was subpoenaed to testify under oath before the government and if you lie there, you go to jail. As for Skierman's comment that cycling is the most tested- yes there are a lot of tests but the whole point is that these guys are very careful and systematic so they don't get caught. They use the example of Marion Jones- 168 tests and none were ever positive, but, as we all know, she was roided out.

no you are wrong. it has the most highly advanced doping techniques out there. Some serious shit goes down during these tour de/di _______(insert country here). there are tons of racers that are caught each year, and a bunch of past champs have been stripped of their titles. doping is extremely prevalent, and kinda like baseball in the late 90's, if you aint doing it you ARE the minority.

It seems like every year someone new accuses him of doping. Last year it was Floyd Landis, this year it is Tyler Hamilton. It's a great way for an aging former teammate to get a ton of exposure as their career is dying.

if an athlete, such as lance, had access to very advanced doping techniques at the time, then by now they would have created a way to test for that and he would be called out. i don't know if you're even into the sport but a couple of top guys from the time of lance racing, were disqualified and banned for doping which all had access to the same stuff that lance would have had access to. it's also one of the reasons why, along with the accusations against armstrong (one of the most successful american athletes), is the reason why road cycling has been associated with doping so much to the mainstream people, as yourself. and one last thing is that baseball is still insanely lax about testing players for doping... REALLY lax compared to road cycling...

he may have, but unless they come out with really solid proof and evidence, nothing is ever going to happen.

Lance is the most tested, but that doesn't necessarily mean the cleanest. Well, of course it does for the time when he was tested...but it's also an indicator that he might have simply been the most advanced. Half of the problem with doping is that the dopers are always a few steps ahead of the testers. So each time they found a better way to test...lance/the rest were a year or two ahead of them. It's a hell of a lot easier to put something into the body than it is to figure out what it is/if it is present.


I don't doubt lance's badassness, and he's definitely a great person, but I'd still be a bit disappointed if he ever was found to be doping.

And i've got no doubt that they would strip him of his TDF wins. The problem with cycling is that by all logic, the winner can never be trusted.

Hamilton doesn't matter, the important news of the past few days is George Hincapie coming forward. In coming forward, he also admitted to doping himself. Hincapie is a trustworthy guy who has never been caught, and would have absolutely no reason to come forward unless he really was telling the truth. I know people want to believe in Lance, but the "everyone else is lying and I'm telling the truth" is somewhat ridiculous. He doped, it doesn't really matter, get over it.

The thing is, they don't really want to catch everyone who is doping. That would be incredibly bad publicity... and the dopers are always ahead of the testers by a few years, as someone else already pointed out.

and one of the major testing centers is run by the french... really, they're sour about how poor their riders are.

i think it's more about the pride/honor of the Tour.

It's a sacred thing in France, and the idea of people cheating to win it disgusts people.

I would bet everything i own that lance cheated, but i don't care the slightest bit. Absolutely everyone in cycling was doing the same thing. I don't think it takes away from what he accomplished.

as people said though the sad truth about sports these days is that theres tons of enhancments and roids, for certain sports such as biking, there are more people that do it because it is such a demanding sport, im sure lance has taken some form of a drug to help him, but there are so many different kinds of medicine and training techniques these days that it could have been somthing as simple as some vitamin pill that helps your body recover and be stronger or it could be a full dosage of steroids laced with speed and a beaver tranquilizer that made him a super human

iv always looked up to lance all through out his career, he has inspired myself as well as millions of other people, cant see this as being true and I hope its not, but until Lance him self says that he did anything i dont believe shit

I don't understand the obsession of trying to prove that lance doped. He past all the drug tests during his titles and road well to get them. Are they going to strip him of his titles because a former teammate said he doped? No, and besides him coming out and admitting that he doped throughout his professional carrier they never will. I have no opinion on whether he was a doper or not but cant people just move on with there lives. Im surprised more people haven't already moved on to contidor. The way he's been riding in the giro is beastly.

sorry to break the bubbles of the loyalist die hards (skiierman) but the general consensus of the bike community is that lance doped and everyone else dopes too. let me repeat, its been pretty much laid to rest that lance doped. it has also been laid to rest that he is one of the most talented athletes of all time.
