Xbox 360 wont read discs or dvd's help

so im stuck at home for a week becuase of an injury and im going crazy so god dam bored....anyways my xbox works fine but wont read any discs or anything. Anyone know how to fix this without sending it in to microsoft?

Keep opening and closing the disc tray repeatedly, or tap on the top when it says "reading disc" decently hard. Apparently it knocks the laser into alignment or something. Opening and closing the disc tray usually works for me though.

how old is your xbox? there was an update that came out that makes some xbox's unable to read discs. If it is this then contact xbox live and you will get a free new slim black xbox with 250gig harddrive.

If it's not that though then it is just broken, which is shitty.

clean out the inside of the disc tray with a slightly damp paper towel/tissue and if that doesnt work blow into it for a while. It's probably not reading it due to dust in the disc tray.

Carefully take your xbox apart and clean the disc reader lens and the little track it slides on.

This consistently works for me:

take out the hard drive (while switched off),
with no disk in open and close the tray,
the xbox will make a whirring noise,
instantly after this noise stops,
press the open tray button and put the disk in.
