Making circumcision illegal

So it looks at though banning male circumcision for the under 18 set (so, pretty much everyone - I don't know any guys really willing to do it when they're older) has been cleared to go on the November ballot in good old San Francisco. I think it's unlikely to pass, but if it did, it'd make the city the first to outlaw the procedure.

Personally I think money is better spent elsewhere, and this will just lead to a lot of sketchy back alley penis clipping the way outlawing abortion would lead to desperate women sticking a hanger up their vagina and scrambling things about a bit. And because there would not be any religious exemptions, I agree with those saying it's against the First Amendment's right to freedom of religion. Not that I'm religious, but still.

But on the other hand, a lot of people believe parents shouldn't be able to choose something this drastic for their sons, that there's no real benefits of circumcision that a good cleaning can't take care of that doesn't involve permanently mutilating a baby, and that it decreases sexual pleasure. I know it is something that is much less common outside of America, but it's become so standard here that I think most people don't think it's a big deal.

Anyway, since ns is made up primarily of guys...thoughts?

It's your child, you can do whatever you want with it. That's like saying you can't teach your kid how to write and speak english because it doesn't know what it wants. ( i get the whole mutalation thing, but really?)

Everyone i know that is circumcised likes it, and everyone that is uncircumcised likes it. It's what we grew up with, it's all we know. I've seen NO difference in people that are and people that arn't, you can't just go up to someone and be like your penis got cut as a kid.

i completely disagree.

i totally believe that parents have every right to impose their will on their children. if they feel it's best for them, so be it. who are you / is anyone else to say what's best for someone else's kids? sure, there's shit that crosses the line, but something as inconsequential as circumcising them? who gives a shit. if the parents want to do that because of religious beliefs, so fucking what. there really are zero repercussions to having no foreskin, other than the fact that haters are always going to hate on religion and feel that they have to do something to fight it for no fucking reason. it's like those ignorant people that parade around bashing gays. who gives a fuck. let people live. it isn't hurting you, what they're doing isn't hurting them. they're just living the way they want to live, like families who are doing what is a tradition and common practice to them by having their boys circumcised.

if there was a benefit to not being circumcised, i might support it, but there isn't. it's just a way for the government to control what the fuck its people do, and that's fucking retarded. if you want to practice a certain religion, put your kid in a certain sport, make them take spanish lessons, or dress a certain way, SO BE IT. we all are the way we are because of our upbringing, and i'd say there are more pertinent issues out there that are detrimental to a child's well-being than being circumcised.

Also, you want to talk about what is and isn't the norm based on your country, where only 1.4% of the population practices Islam or Judaism, 78% are members of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, and the other 20% are non religious? Shocker that circumcision isn't common there, where the population is definitely representative of all the rest of the world...

And yeah, I got my stats from Wikipedia.

And also, yes I know Finland isn't the only country where its not the norm.

Why does this matter? its just skin. I actually just realized how stupid this argument is.

From a POV of aesthetics, it does matter - I watched that Penn & Teller episode and all those chicks screaming "Eww! Uncircumsized is nasty" and a lot of people in this thread saying the same, it's fucking weird.

And yes, it's an even more bigger issue that mutilation of an infant is considered a-ok "just because" it's a religious thing. I for one didn't choose to be baptized and had to sit in school studying religion until I was 18 and could legally quit the church. Thank "God" I wasn't born into a religion where I would have been violated six weeks into my life on top of that.

But hey, I'm gonna go out now to enjoy this fine Saturday and possibly dangle my uncircumsized cock in the warm summer breeze if I feel like it - just like nature made me.

So I was wrong, it happens, I'm sure you've been wrong before also. It's quite simple to just say "actually, there are many known benefits, that you must not know about, here are some".

lets not confuse the issue with facts. it's fucking circumcision. how many people have posted in here saying they're circumcised and dont give a fuck. it isn't a life changing procedure that is going to hurt your quality of life or have potential dangers down the road, so let families do it if it's what they believe in. really not a big deal at all.

but like i said earlier, seems to me it's more about banning religious practice than anything, but people hide behind the excuse that it's "child mutilation" and parents shouldn't have a right to do that. i call bullshit. haters keep on hating on religion cause it's the "in" thing to do these days and claim it's for the child's safety or some shit.. lulz.
