The Soul Crew Lost Edits

A few weeks ago, I began a project called the Soul Crew Lost Edits. I was in a bit of an editing slump and had all this footage from the 2009-2010 season that I had wanted to release, but had never gotten around to editing (for the most part).

I decided to cut the footage into four* short edits, the Lost Edits. Tonight, I finished the last one. I'm pretty stoked on the series as a whole; it turned out exactly how I wanted it to.

Hope you guys like them!!

*The Third Lost Edit was actually created right after the footage was shot in Spring 2010.

Also, the First Lost Edit was the only one not shot with an HVX and 35mm adapter. It was shot with the Canon T2i.

Thanks!

Just to clear things up in case there is any confusion, this isn't footage that didn't "make the cut." This was all footage that I was going to put into one big 2009-2010 season edit that didn't end up ever happening, so I made these instead.

Oh.... I thought it was didn't make the cut stuff. Actually, it really had me confused for a bit because I was thinking "How did this not make it into edits already?" Still really, really nice regardless.

haha yeah this is some of my better footage for sure. The critical 3 and 2 out of the dfd rail in the fourth edit i would consider to be two of the best shots i've ever gotten filming-wise.

So what looked like the first and third shot to me correct? And All of the shots were really good, it's hard to put a label on "best" in my opinion.

yup thats right. i just really like them because they're pretty smooth; follow cams really aren't a strong point of mine, especially considering that i was filming with a 35mm adapter mounted onto my HVX which makes it a lot heavier and the shot is much more zoomed in and therefore harder to keep steady. so i was stoked on those

but yeah, i intentionally made it clear that it wasn't completely a clean landing. he never put his hands down though, just reverted around and kinda slid into a snowplow. you have to give him credit though because 1. he's black and 2. that was only the second run after he stomped his first dub clean (which i got a shot of, but it was too soft to use)

I've looked back at some of your older stuff today... Wow. You have progressed so much as a videographer and editor that it's amazing. I wish you would make another film like Hello. again, but considering that the Soul Crew has gone their separate ways for the most part that would be hard... Congratulations, you are one of my favorite members on NS.

You don't learn how to film and edit, you develop how to film and edit. Sure, you have to learn how to use editing software and how to use a camera, but after that, you're on your own. Filming and editing is art; it's your own style and opinion.

ya man but ive always wondered if edits that look like this come from someone who just got into it and started experimenting, or if they have been taught from professionals or taken collage classes and gotten a degree in the art. just wondering

Well, Will looks like he got into editing 2-3 years ago, so I guess that kindof gives you an idea of how long it takes to develop a certain style.

it's kinda hard to say where exactly i learned, i'm pretty much entirely self taught. i am in film school at college, but i only just finished freshman year so i haven't learned much from my classes yet.

But some of my biggest filming influences are paul john, jonas hansson, of course all the big ski filmers, and a lot of the younger generation of ski filmers. i watch a lot of their edits and find aspects i like and incorporate them into my own work in my own way (for example, i borrowed from paul john the effect where i zoom out on my adapter to make a black box around the video).

i've been filming stuff since 7th grade, but i didn't seriously start filming and editing until probably 10th grade. ever since then i've just been trying a lot of stuff, just seeing what works and what doesn't.

thanks man! I really wish we could do a project like that too, but you're right about it just being a little too hard. but who knows, maybe someday we'll have another chance to do some sort of project.

when i bought my T2i, I wasn't really thinking of it as a 'switch' so much as an 'addition.' i spent all of the 2009/2010 ski season shooting with my HVX, a heavy set of rails, a 35mm adapter, and a few different lenses. even though the shots looked dope, carrying all that shit around got really old.

i went on a trip to south america in the beginning of summer 2010 and bought my T2i right before that so that I could still get beautiful footage and have shallow depth of field without having to bring my whole HVX setup. but ever since then, it's just been so much more practical to shoot with the T2i that I've only used the HVX for a wedding i shot and a couple establishing shots in a ski edit this season.

ah i read that wrong. the reason it seemed like i went from T2i to HVX is because the first Lost Edit was actually the last one i shot (shot it after i purchased a T2i), it just happened to be the first one i edited.

haha yeah I was a bit confused at first but i gotcha now, great feedback. DSLR's seem so practical, especially the T2i with that small purchase price.
