Camera Suggestions

my birthdays coming up and i want a new camera that my parents will pay half for. i was looking into the canon rebels (the t2i, t3i, t3) and like those. but i cant decide if i want to get a video camera that tkes good stills, or a dslr that takes good video. what are your suggestions.
