Hey so what is the best kind of car/truck you can buy for under or around a 1000. Im looking for a decent size trunk and good gas mileage.

If your definition of decent gas mileage is above 20mpg, then a truck is not for you.

However that said chevy s10 with 2.2 or 2.5 and youll get around 30 mpg. Its a dog though and all youll want is more after that.

any old toyota pickup. id wanna spend more around 2 though. but toyota pickups are some of the best automobiles you can buy.

maybe its just where i live but i have no idea how you can get any car for $1000 thats even worth the money needed to make it road legal.

just look for anything. all the kids on this site are gonna be like "YO FIND A SICK OLD YOTA PICKUP BROO!!!" but in reality those are few and far between because thre isnt exactly an unlimited number of those you can just go out and buy. any of those you find for a grand is basically just gonna be a field truck.


i would just peruse craigslist and try to find ANY car around that $1000 price range, or try to trade something for part of the money or find a family member. with a budget that low i dont think you can be very choosy.


but whatever. maybe im wrong and theres just a giant factory somehow churning out used toyata pickups from the 80's and selling them to little old ladys who then sell them to you for bottom dollar.

A decent size truck and gas mileage are words that don't go together.

you don't buy a truck for gas mileage, cause you don't get any. Stick to a car if your looking to save money on gas.

You mad bro? They are relatively easy to find, you just have to look for stock ones that look like old man trucks. You can get those for $1300 or so, put $300 in it for new springs, and you got a capable, non gas guzzling, badass truck that is and has been one of the most reliable out there.

For $1,000, the kind of car you can get is pretty dependent on your area. My suggestion is to get a domestic coupe/midsize at an auction.

Domestic = simple and cheap to fix.

Coupe = good gas mileage, and a cheap coupe will seem faster than a cheap midsize or truck.

Midsize = more trunk space, but you can get a ski rack to help solve that problem if you get the coupe.

Trust me, having to fold the seats up for your friends to get into a car that you will probably crash isn't really a bad thing.

one of their best models too IMO, the 3 series is one of the most balanced, best handling cars you can buy in that catagory. with enough usable power to be there when you need it. which is all a good driver should need.
you can usually pick a bad driver out when the first thing they look at is power. there is much much more to driving a car than mashing a pedal in a straight line. accelerating is probably the most boring aspect of driving and takes the least amount of skill.
id take a normal 325 over some understeering, bad turbo lag STI any day. but i wouldnt attempt to murder it out like that retarded one that was posted earlier.

interesting... but just so you know. an sti will run circles around an e46 325 ALL DAY (in addition to making over 100 extra hp). ps. lag isn't an issue either.

i think it would be closer than you think, acceleration wise, yeah the sti wins hands down, but on a track, mountain road, autocross, etc.. the e46 would be very close. ive seen STIs get run down by some pretty unexpected cars on track days, a stock engine miata, on coilovers and good street tires. a mostly stock engine e30 with springs and track tires. i was actually riding in my friends sti when the e30 destroyed him, and while he's not an amazing driver he was pretty damn close to the limit of his car. STI's just push wayyy too much, and it really does effect their track performance when your 10 MPH down coming out of every corner.
e46's are probably my least favorite gen of 3 series though, id take an e30 any day. though the ZHP is badass, and probably one of my favorite bmws.

This. Although, if you live in the mountains you'll probably want 4WD, which means your gas mileage will be worse and it might be more of an expensive buy, but way better than taking chains off and on all the time.

I'm looking into getting a 4WD Toyota pickup or maybe a 2nd generation Xterra when my little Corolla finally kicks the bucket.

Your comparisons/conclusions on these cars is mainly dependant on the driver.

A good driver will nearly always trump a "bad" driver, even if their car is drastically outpowered.

also..most STI drivers are hacks..

just a thought.

of course there any many extremely good drivers who own sti's. (like any car)


but for every one of those good drivers, there are dozens who own the same cars who have insufficient skills to properly drive these cars.

STI's are no exception. it seems like these (as well as e46 M3's) are the hack-bro car of choice.

i completely agree, most people buy an sti because its a "rally car", ken block drives one, and they only pay attention to the numbers... you see alot more shitty drivers in sti's than other sports cars.
but honestly my friend is a pretty damn good driver compared to your average track day guy there wasnt much more time to be gained when i rode with him. i used to do some instructing at track days so i ride along with a lot of people, and id definitely put him well above average.
anyway. i guess my point is the 3 series is a much better platform than the sti. and even in stock form its balance makes it a much better all around car. its just that as it comes from the factory its a little softer than you would want, and needs better tires and pads. the sti's only advantage is its engine and thats the only reason it will beat cars like the e46, but even then its not a very good powerband. comparing the ZHP to the sti is much more fair since it comes from the factory much more performance oriented.

hahah i know it is, i was just being exactly what you said. A cock.  Only because I drive a 325i :p  If you insist on calling it a "moms car", at least it's a pretty sick one.  A 3-series M3 is badass.  And yes, I'll vouch for anyone on here that says a 325i would get its ass kicked by an STi.  These 2.5l engines in the 325i's are slower than a donkey draggin a plow through molasses in the middle of January.  But hey, it's a nice car and I like it.  I have my R6 when I wanna go fast.

Anyways, that's not my car, I got it off google. I don't feel like buying a car right now, because I won't be able to afford to keep up with insurance and stuff. For next year, what kind of car could I find used under $10,000, standard and something a litte quicker than a 325i if they're as slow as everyone says? I have found a 1965 mustang for under 10gs that have been restored but it's auto..
