Which three will you pick? Focusing more on DSLR/SLR's, but other's are suitable.

My Selection (Canon):
EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM (Wide)

EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM (Standard, I have this lens and love it.)

EF 400mm f/4L DO IS USM (Tele. I wish I had the money for this.)

If said lens breaks or wears down, you get a replacement. No changing. And on a body of your choice.

Have at it M+A.

If we are sticking to Canon:

EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Autofocus Lens

EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Autofocus Lens

EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM

If I want to go a little overboard:

Zeiss Compact Prime CP.2 18mm/T3.6

Nikon's good as well, and so on and so forth. I personally wouldn't want Zeiss's though, the glass quality image wise between Canon's L Series and a Zeiss is pretty minimal, barely noticeable.

But these arent the average Zeiss, they are the Compact Prime Cinema Lenses. At least when it comes to shooting video, they are about as good as it gets besides maybe Cooke primes.

Zeiss cinemas are definitely amazing, no doubt. Didn't say they weren't. I dream of having a set, but to a certain point, the difference is so minimal that it's pointless. Catch my drift?

But If we're going overboard, yeah, I'm with you on your selection of Zeiss's.

14-24 2.8 - 28-70 2.8 - 70-200 2.8 just cuz they kinda fit together.
the 24mm 1.4 is my dream lens and a tilt shift would be cool to have. and a macro.
and i would use a teleconverter on the 70-200

i am only chosing that origonal setup because it covers 14-200mm at 2.8 so i have almost no limitations other then the pros that come with a prime lens and are not on the standard zooms.

Oh sorry, would use it for my 7D, and since the f/4L is sharper and lighter than the f/2.8, I would rather go with that one!

Well for me personally, i'd love to have an 85 1.2L II, but I think the 85 1.8 is a fantastic lens by itself and is just as good of a tool as its 4 digit brother. I went realistic with my lenses I guess.

Nikon's trinity. Nikon 14-24 f2.8, Nikon 24-70 f2.8, and Nikon 70-200 f2.8, as for body I'd agree with whatever the d3s replacement will be it should be pretty sick.

You need to look at the bigger picture. Zeiss lenses (EF, ZF) are great because they are the same optics as the CP.2 series in a cheaper housing. Make no mistake though, the housing is still built tough. You can abuse the shit out of it and it will still hold up. It is also entirely manual, with a focus ring as nice as they come. AF is handy and quick and all, but it takes half the fun out of photography, and it's a useless feature for video.

There's a reason why certain NatGeo photographers have sold all their L glass to buy Zeiss primes. It's kind of funny how Canon made the 5DmkII with such high resolution that it reveals all the flaws of their L glass (softness, CA).

Considering that Zeiss EF/ZF lenses are more durable, optically superior in every way, have a better housing design, and are hardly more expensive (even cheaper in some instances) than Canon L glass, the difference is not pointless at all.


Canon does make nice glass, but they are far from the best. In my opinion, they belong nowhere on a hypothetical list of "dream lenses."

I have to disagree about the crop sensor lenses. I prefer a crop sensor to a full sensor for a few reasons. Most importantly, the image quality on the newer dx cameras is nearing the quality of top of the line cameras. The cameras are also smaller and lighter, which makes them easier to carry around. Another thing that I love about a dx camera is that when I use a 70-200 to shoot sports, the dx sensor gives a full frame equivalent of (aprox) 110-320. A lens with those focal lengths would cost a lot more than a 70-200 (especially at f/2.8)! This gives me more zoom with a lighter lens and camera than I would need with a full frame camera.

that makes perfect sense and I shoot on a crop sensor camera but if you only get 3 lenses for the rest of your life why rule out full frame cameras? that's all I'm trying to say

Get a teleconverter if you want more distance. ISO on FX is much better and allows you to take full advantage of the glass.

Also, often FX has 100% view finders which is much nicer and makes a big difference if you shoot a lot.

My D3 poops on the D7000.


Given it was a couple more dolla dolla bills yo.


I love my 14-24 f/2.8

so I'd take that, a 50 1.4 G, and 85 1.4 G

NO TELECONVERTERS ALLOWED. That gives you more options and more focal lengths, I want you to choose the three that you will live the rest of your life with.

You aren't allowed to have other lenses come and go, you have to use these three until the end of your life, for clarification. If upgrades intended for that EXACT lens come out, you are allowed to do that. That way your technology won't become WAYYY outdated.

That's about all I have to say, commence thread again.

no for real kiddies, i was trollin on the whole autofocus video, i saw something similar posted on skateperception where they all went apeshit, i wanted to see what you'd say.

For real though, I do like the 1.4 better than the 1.2 mainly because its sharper at any aperture above 2.0, where light is low but not THAT LOW. And there really isn't THAT Much of a sharpness difference between the 1.2 and 1.4. Obviously the faster lens is nice, however, overall performance I'd prefer the 1.4
