im looking into getting a saga jacket knowing its a shell but is it warm enough for east cost winters? (-20) and how do you lair up with just a shell?

....No, but seriously, I have a Saga jacket and It holds up fine. I live in the east coast. I usually layer it with my tall tees, chronologically from XXXXL-XXXXXXXXL. That usually keeps me warm.

i have an intense, genuine hatred for you.
buy your saga, layer with under armour, fleece, wool, whatever you please. you should be fine.

Get a Shell. I get the same weather, January and February can be weeks straight of -20. A shell you can layer so as it gets progressively warmer throughout the season you can slowly strip off layers underneath.

For those -22 days I go for Under Armour, a poler fleece sweatshirt, Hoody, then the jacket. Keeps ya nice and toasty.

heres an honest answer: personally its all about what you layer with. personally i go with underaurmor on the bottom, long sleve shirt, tall tee, hoodie, jacket. on very cold days, on warmer i just eliminate either the hoodie or underaurmor

hope that helps! btw, IMO shell jackets are much better because they are sooo much more versatile in all weather conditions because you can ajust how warm u wanna be.

Just layer up like everyone is saying, and no, I'm not talking about layering your tall tees. I talking under armor, a short, a fleece / wool sweater, then your jacket.

non-cotton base layer combined with:

really warm: just a shell
mild: pullover patagonia fleece thing+shell
average ec cold mid winter temp: nano puff pullover+shell
very cold: nano puff with a vest+shell
extremely cold: under armour cold gear with my flylow puffy coat
sofuckingcoldmyballsfalloff: under armour, fleece pullover, flylow puffy

happens all to often. this is when i go with cold gear baselayer, adidas loose=fit baselayer, UA hoodie, and my Causwell jacket.

Armada makes a really good baselayer. While in revelstoke I wore my saga and an armada base layer and was toasty the entire day.

I like shells coz its easy to layer up when its cold and when its warm well u've got a shell so no worries, plus i like gore tex alot and from my experience goretex shells are cheaper than insulated gore tex :)

yea i got just a shell this year and im just gonna layer it up im from the east coast too and it should be fine i would just get the shell if i were you

You got hate for not knowing how to layer....
Wear baselayers. Either wool or a wicking fabric. Or multiple. All cotton does is gets wet and absorbs the heat off of your body. If I wear a tee for skiing, I always have something like a wool layer or a wicking fabric under it.

moisture wicking base-layers are what you need. i fucking love under armour, because even if i sweat it's not gonna cool me down. fleece is sick too, even when it gets wet, you stay pretty warm. hot chillys make pretty solid fleece gear.

I use a Helly Hanson wicking layer. Along with some Patagonia Fleece Layers. Helly is the best for the wicking. I haven't used any of thier fleece or wool layers yet though.

yeah and orage makes a ok baselayer too, i dunno if they are still doing this but backcountry.com was giving the orage baselayers for free with any orage purchase so i got a 100$ baselayer for 20$ because i bought a teeshirt
