HDMI help

ok so this is driving me insane. i have a sony vaio laptop that connects to my samsung and lg hdtv perfectly.

i also have a digistar hdtv in my room and for some reason, i cant connect it. its fucked up, when i go on the hdmi input, nothing happens, but if i go to TV mode, the computer is recognized, but it wont output an image or sound....

another weird thing is if im in hdmi mode on the tv and i turn the tv off, my computer is then recognized. this is driving me insane, please give me all the help you can!

note: i connected it to my tv a couple months ago, so i know it is capable.

what exactly do you mean by recognized?
how would the tv recognize your computer if it were off? i'm just trying to get an idea of what exactly is going on. sounds weird.

the only thing i can think of , is you might have to change the display setting to monitor. Some tvs/monitors my computer automatically does it if the tv is on, other tvs, i have to select the monitor setting from my computer. (also in that case, the option to have your laptop display on while your monitor is displaying, does not work for me, so i have to use the monitor only setting.)
