I'm doing an assignment for school about a popular culture. The one I chose of course is: skiing! Surprise surprise, and I can now 'study' while I cruise round NS! I'm new at the whole ski culture thing, and I was wondering if there is a way that you're all socialised at the snow. Are there any initiation things you had to go through, and stuff like that. Also, I need to know what values skiers have, so please tell me! You'll help me pass my HSC (big scary exams I have to pass to get into uni), so I'll love you all forever. Thanks!!

.you could put that skiers that want to be accepted as a newschooler cant wear neon colors. unless shane mcconky. behaviour, you cant act like a flaming homosexual all the time ( dont try to be a snow boarder) skiers are socialized by jsut chillin with there frends, by meeting them off the hill or what not. or they are socialized by how well they can throw down.

i value the people i ski with. my equipment. must be in good working order, cold days, and making frist tracks on the hill.
ill be friends with anyone on the hill. they dont need to be my age. they can be 3 years old or 70 il stil be their friend and respect them for sharing the sport or the hill that i love so much. I also (being an ontarian) cherish the might snow guns.

Skiing... is more than merely an 'extreme' sport. Ours is a sport that has been around for hundreds of years, it is the foundation of snow recreation and still the backbone of the industry. We have seen our friends and comrades turn to snowboarding and other sports, but we are not afraid. We love skiing because it is more than a sport. It is a way of life. Mouthing the words 'skier' entails more than a person who participates in that particular sport- it indicates a person who dreams of snow, who lives for the fear and energy and excitement of a tree-lined pathway or an empty mountain face or a massive booter. To ski is to live, with boldness and energy.

One part of skiing culuture that no one has said yet is the music. I defenitly would say music plays a huge rol in the skiing society.

you have to put that skiing is much more than a sport--it is a lifestyle-a way of life~~and skiing is not just throwing down huge tricks~ its also about getting face shots in 2 feet deep powder or tearing up glades or rippin up the park~its everything

Skiing is a way of life. I ski every time i can, whether in the summer, or in the dead of winter. (Oh, and most skiers dont' smoke, like myself) We have respect for other skiers, and small respect for snowboarderes. We've been around longer, and skiers are nicer, cooler to hang with, and overall, are awesome. At the Summit (Cascade Mountains, WA) my friends and i are porbably the best young skiers there, and we've got some initiation stuff. Not much, but there's the big air club (launch over a 40 ft. table top and land), stuff like that. I will never give up skiing, and i will die skiing, not from lying in bed. If you have specific questions, send me an e-mail.

say aomething about how some people save up all there money for almost 2 years, eat shitty food to save money, dont go to movies and alot of other stuff for 2 years just to get a good pair of skis.
(i feel like emphasizing the 2 years thing because thats what i did)

I definately have to agree that skiing is a lifestyle... Since you can't really make much money at it, even at the pro level, all you have to depend on is the time you have on the snow. For many people it's either getting a good education and a secure job, taking that one vacation a year, supporting a family in a plush home, or skiing every day with nothing to show for it except a few pictures, maybe a couple trophies or something, and the priceless memories locked in your head. Eventually, every skier has to go back to face the real world, usually with little in his pocket, so is it worth it? Ask any hardcore skier. And if you really want to know, just spend one year in the mountains... You'll see why we make the compromise! It's all or nothing! It's all AND nothing at the same time! Good luck with your project! I hope this puts a few things into prospective for you! Peace, N8
