Dale Talkington is a fucking Ninja and his heavy head is to die for.

Others would be all of stept. They are all steezy as fuck but each in his own way so it makes the movies great to watch.

I don't think that would necessarily be the case [regarding distinctive styles propagating].. Skiers entering the industry will most likely begin by conforming to the most popular professional skiers' styles because that is what sells. It is rare for unknown skiers with unfamiliar styles to gain access into the industry. Only once a skier has been admitted and has made a name for themselves can they truly begin to experiment with new styles, however by this point their own style has become a part of them and is difficult to change.

IMO.

It says that the crux of our culture is incredibly centralized due in no small part to this website. The sport has grown up alongside the internet. Kids in NC watch kids skiing in Summit and they emulate it. Pre-internet, sports grew organically and regionally. Now, there's relatively little diversity in the sport because there's a groupthink/consensus mentality that prevails.

Respectfully disagree. Before the internet, kids at smaller mountains were still emulating pro skiers, but they had much fewer examples to follow. Instead of 1000 edits of guys with a wide variety of unique styles, there were only 5-10 major film companies that put out a single movie. Remember back when EVERYONE was just copping gorilla steez? Or you literally were not cool unless you had a bandana tied to your pants like Mik D?

Obviously there are still super influential style trends, but I think, overall, style has diversified MORE because of the internet, not less.

I would have to second this. Someone else mentioned angry style. Especially on rails, he always looks like he is kicking the crap out of the feature.

Hornbeck - smooth lazy style. So sick to watch.

JO - I didn't see anyone mention him but his style is unmistakable.

Spriggs - I could see him from a mile off and know it was him.

These are a few guys that I think I would recognize in generic outer wear.

You could argue that, and I think hindsight will prove you're right in the long-term. However, the truth is that the majority of kids are still imitating a very select few, and I think NS is directly responsible for narrowing the spectrum in terms of taste making and trendsetting. Also, as newschool skiing is still so young, it simply hasn't had time to grow and diverge like the other similar sports we're always comparing it to. This season has definitely brought on a bit of a shift with the mass popularity of some quirky left of center webisodes, and I think that'll continue to push diversity. However, whenever you have such a dominant single source of information for anything, it tends to act as a homogenizing force.

the way that matt walker taps in and out of every rail he hits is pretty distinctive
also Hornbecks shuffles on his landing are pretty distinctive

I think the cause is important to note, but whats more important is what freeskiing should do about it.

In an age where the gap between pro's and beginners is SO huge and where it takes years and years of dedicated training and gobs of money just to have any chance of winning a major contest... whats the point if we're just going to see every skier do robot-perfect tricks in every film and in every contest. Seeing doubles for the first time was amazing, I was sincerely blown away by Jon's Kangaroo Flip... but the magic is gone now that they're 'easy' and there are unknowns throwing them and posting them in the video section on NS. Simpy put, they're not as fun to watch. Triples are exhausting my fun meter even faster that doubles. Cool at first, impressive as fuck, but now after seeing everyone start to stomp them... meh?

Homogenization produces dullness. Just like in biology, you have one species to take off and overrun everything else like crazy, it'll tip the ecosystem and kill diversity. In contrast, some of the coolest places on Earth are hugely diverse, with millions of different species providing crazy and immensely interesting forms of life, BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS GIVEN A CHANCE. Same should work for skiing, I say. If homogeneous tricks and skiers are all that this sport rewards, that is what it will mostly create. If that appeals to you... well, you're in luck I guess, we'll have all the precision and monotony of aerial skiing or moguls. And thats what Freeskiing set out to become, right?

May I propose an alternative. Reward style. Provide it a spotlight, support the skiers that are doing something different, and slowly the sport will start rewarding it. Its your choice who in the skiing world gets popular, and that popularity sends skiers into the spotlight where sponsors and film companies pick them up. You decide who you see in next years movies, you decide what events are cool and deserve coverage. Support what you really want to see.
