i got suspended with three weeks left in the school year yesterday. my dads in china and my moms in california, leaving me with no where to go.

monday morning i head for the hills to live off of what i can for two weeks.

Really though, do you not have any other family? I'm assuming you're at a boarding school, in which case they still need to make sure that you have adequate housing even if you're suspended.

If all else fails, roughing it like you supposedly plan to is hella fun. Just make sure that someone (family) knows where you plan to be, for how long, and when you're coming back so they know to send the search teams if you don't show up them.

Other than that, I hope you were a boyscout or know a thing or two about being in the wilderness. Don't get yourself killed or some shit.

McCandless definitely did not know what he was getting himself into, but I'm guessing you aren't a fan of Walden or of the romantic poets, based on your apparent hatred of a book, which stems not from the plot, but from the fact that it is McCandless's death is romanticized by the public eye. No, his death shouldn't be romanticized, it was his own fault. That said, the book is outright inspiring— I know that after I read it, though I felt no sympathy for McCandless, it strengthened within my mind the romantic notions I was already developing on my own. I went on a huge romanticism and transcendentalism binge after that, which has (in combination with a number of existentialist works) left me satisfied with my mortality and life in general.

Tangentially related, yes, but you've got to look beyond plot and public opinion when you read a book...

I never said I liked how it was written, or by whom. I said it kickstarted in me an interest in literature I would have otherwise ignored, which significantly impacted my worldview... and that you shouldn't ignore the ideas posed in a piece of writing just because you don't like how it's written. Krakauer has nothing to do with McCandless's story other than that he's the guy who capitalized on it. Fair game.

walden is in no way related to dumb ass kids who decide to go live out in the wild by themselves. walden was in a prime location for survival and it was for the main purpose of telling others of his "way" to live- his suggestion of how to live. walden only told of how it was possible to survive without the common luxurious advantages of the day and still do it happily. comparing walden to anything relevant is fucking retarded and you might as well go out and try to survive after watching an episode of bear grylls.

Fuck this thread. I would just like to say that Skiierman is untouchable. Whatever you say or do won't change his view points for the simple reason that he is ignorant beyond belief, kind of like people believing god created the earth in six days. Things come to his brain, he says them without thinking, and then he reaps the rewards. He should be put a a pedestal for all to see.
