Give me suggestions for a car

Im looking for a new car. Ill have around $5000. Looking for a 4 door preferable, but would be fine with a 2. Good gas mileage, more of a compact car but one that can hold skis. I also want a car thats fairly reliable, I don't want the car to be in the shop 6 days a week. Been looking at cars like a golf or a gti, impreza and even a jeep cherokee. I figured you guys know more about cars than I do, so what should I be looking for?

pontiac bonneville ssei supercharged.

4 door, leather, 8 speak sound, all the bells and whistles, 240 hp, 280 lbs ft.

I have one and it is so sick. Really fast and a great sleeper car but it also has a pass through for skis and is really comfortable. 17 mpg city, 27 mpg highway.

Used you can get one anywhere from $3000-$7000 so its in your price range. Check it out.

just find any of these three in good condition. cheapest or first one that you find is the one you want.

although right now im thinking golf gti
or cherokee...
or impreza hatch...

90s Jeep Grand Cherokee. Do a search on http://www.autotrader.com for 91-98 Jeeps around your zip code and you can probably find some for even under 3 grand.

cherokee is a solid car with the inline 6 but they get shit gas mileage. If you want a small car with good mileage look at older civics and accords though they will not do well with snow.

If you can find one (BIG IF) get an Audi Ur-S4 or S6. These cars were built between 1992 and 1996 and are by far some of the most reliable cars Audi has ever made. Mine has 240k miles on it and still runs like a champ, and trust me if you go skiing which I assume you do, AWD is a big plus. They're stock 230 hp and easily modable to 400+. Milage is about 22 city / 29 highway.

Other than that the GTI or Impreza are both good too. Good luck though finding a decent Jeep for 5 grand. I would warn you against getting an Audi A4 especially with the 1.8T engine as those are maintenance nightmares and the turbos are generally not great and have an unfortunate tendency of blowing up. The 2.8 engine however is a bit more reliable. VW Jetta is always a good bet too if you don't mind FWD.

Awesome fucking cars. Great gas mileage and fun cars to drive. Although evidently some years have bad builds.

Impreza hatchbacks are probably a more solidly built car until the head gasket which is an investment to say the least.

really, just go to a used dealer and buy something japanese with good records and low miles.


to the kids telling him to go and buy enthusiast oriented vehicles (ur-s audis, etc), the OP doesn't seem like the type to care about obscure performance/niche cars. the same goes to the kids on here offering their extremely biased opinions based on cars they own.


check online, and go in person to dealers/private sellers. do some quick internet research of suitable cars in your pricerange (with the features you want), and start pursuing them (refer back to line 1).

but seriously get a Honda Accord. cheap to purchase, cheap to maintain, handle pretty well, have plenty of room for your useless shit and run forever. ricers ftw.

holy fuck, someone who actually knows something about cars. Dont buy german if you wish to have a car not cost you monthly repairs. At times I feel like im talking to a brick wall when im talking to kids on this site when it comes to cars.

Ha thats probably an understatement. But I like the suggestions even still. And I have been checking online, Im coming here as more of a last resort to see if theres any cars Ive overlooked. I assumed most people of driving age aren't driving some nice ass car so I could get some decent suggestions.. Keep em coming.

sometime I wonder why I even bother posting in car threads on NS...I just feel like mutilating puppies when I'm done.. the idiocy is stunning.

I have a German car that is one year younger than me (1989). It has ran absolutely fine and I only replaced a bearing and did some maintenance. But your are right, I steer all my non-car friends to honda civics or yota camry's when they are looking for cars. In my experience with Germans, VW's and Audi's are usually a pain and things go wrong, BMW's are where its at.

Audis, TDi's, Imprezas are not niche cars. They are expensive to fix and definitely not what the op is asking for but def. not niche cars. Like someone else said, search autotrader and the like and find something with a clean title (carfax) and mileage you can afford. Check out the civic, accord, stuff like that.

think of your approach this way. What do you need from the car? All drive platforms of cars (FWD,RWD, AWD ) can handle snow if properly equipped so you dont need to feel the "need" to have AWD (subbie, audi) as AWD is additional weight to the car in chasis form and drivetrain weight which in turn means, A) youre paying to repair additional parts ( the awd driveline) B) it takes more fuel to power a drivetrain with more weight, think of how much energy it takes to twist a twig with one hand then try to use the same amount of energy with one hand to turn a heavier branch.... it takes more energy, make sense? You want something to last and not be costly in repairs.... stats wise, japanese cars dominate all other makes of cars in reliability so keep that in mind. You want a common car so when the time comes to replace a part on your car ( shit happens, you will spend money on a car no matter what... but the goal is to reduce the amount you have to spend).... youre going to A) be able to find a aftermarket company that reproduces OEM parts at a fraction of the cost. B) a car that can be easily located at local wrecking yards for cheap cheap cheap parts. You dont care about the car tuner scene so why bother getting an oddball car? Get a car that you can bring to any fuckhead operation in hicktown USA and they will have previous experience working on that car. You want good fuel economy... get a car that is under 2.0 liters of displacement and you should be golden. Get the car inspected before spending a cent on the car, it will cost you a 100 bucks but possibly could save you thousands and will allow you to barter a price based on the state of the car.

get a civic or corolla, honestly.

Haha yeah, Im actually coming off a civic. I love the newer models, but I can't afford em. I hate the way older civics look, unless you go back to the hatchback days.. Got any similar suggestions?

can you get an rsx for your price range? Maybe an mid 90's civic SIR would be amazing for 5k. DC2 integra? 98+ accord? Nissan sentra?
