Travelling Europe/Interrailing

In July, me and my girlfriend are going interrailing for 3 weeks in July. Flying out to Budapest, then making our way back to Angouleme in France where her Aunt lives to stay there for a few days.

So far we've listed Budapest, Split in Croatia, Salzburg Austria, Rome, Venice, Cannes/Nice, and not really sure where else.

Anyone ever done this before? Got any tips or places that are a must visit?

If you are in Budapest and going to Salzburg, you should really stop through Bratislva and Vienna, they're really close together and great places. Bratislava is a bit quiet, but good for a day or two, and is really cheap. Prague is also then only a few (maybe 4) hours north and is a bit touristy, but deservedly so. Tasty beer, spectacular architecture, and a cool feel away from the main squares.

As for other places in Europe, there really are too many to cover in 3 weeks, so don't try and go everywhere because you will spend your whole time travelling, I'd say pick a few that are somewhat linearly connected and enjoy them rather than worrying about crossing the entire continent.

but watch out for being mugged, every single person I know who have been there have been robbed.
Two friends of mine (guys) were in the middle of the night approached by these two transvestites who started to like feel them up and grab them basically everywhere.
When they finally made them to back off and the two shemales ran away they noticed that all their money and drivers license were gone. Fail.

Agreed with Rosbif - don't try to see and do too much otherwise you'll end up doing basically nothing.

My only real tip is consider flying for longer sections. I love traveling by rail, but sometimes you can't beat a cheaper and quicker link. Easyjet is the shit.

As for additional places to go: beat the mad crowds in Rome for a day and go to Cerveteri and the necropolis of Banditaccia. Since you're heading to southern France, old Roman sites and medieval towns in provence are worth a couple days of rolling through the countryside on a scooter.

We've both been to Barcelona already, amazing city, would love to go again but its a bit too far from where we'll be to go again. Know what you mean about the pickpockets though, heard so many stories about it, luckily it didnt happen to us!

@Rosbif, we were thinking of going to maybe 10 places, in 22 days, but i think we've realised thats too much, only get about a day and a half in each place, think we just want to see so much.
I definitely agree with you about choosing less and actually seeing more! Also want to go via Vienna like you said.
Have you been before? Anything we should specifically go do or see?
Thanks for all the recomendations so far.

Whoever said about the islands near Split, we're thinking of visiting Hvar by ferry, worth it?

Haven't been to Vienna since family hols as a kid, so can't really recommend anything that you won't find on Wikitravel/any guide book. Was in Bratislava last year and we opted for more time in Prague instead of Vienna.

Interrailing is tough because you want to get the value out of the ticket, but at the same time, endless trains aren't all that fun. Sure you'll have a sick time wherever though.

Rome is a bit of a detour, so is Split.

I'd do the following:

Budapest - Bratislava / Wien - Salzburg - Innsbruck - Venice - Milan - French Riviera. That's plenty for 3 weeks. Rome is >3 hours south of Venice and Milan by train, and July is going to be insanely hot and insanely crowded. Then again, so is Venice.

I'd say if you want to take a detour, go Milan - Zermatt - Geneva - Lyon - French Riviera. Get away from the big cities, and spend a few days hiking or even skiing in Zermatt. Oh, and don't spend too long in Geneva, a good alternative is Montreux or Lausanne.

Rome is too far and it's not the best time of the year to visit it. Zermatt is a great idea, especially during July, the place is breathtaking, one of the most beautiful place in Europe for sure. Spend a night or 2 there, you won't regret it, specially with ur girl.

Then Swiss riviera, stop in Montreux and  you're there during the first 2 weeks of July, there's the Montreux Jazz Festival wich is insane. You don't have to attend the indoor concerts, just stay outside, around the lake and enjoy it, trust me, its worth it.

you could spend your whole vacation in croatia its so amazing. its my favirote country over here. but you could come to stuttgart germany and see me and go to the fests and shit

Yeah spend your whole vacation in Croatia! Haha, I'm Croatian and its an amazing country. I'll be spending about 2 and a half months there this summer. Almost any city you go to there will be awesome, so definitely consider Zagreb and checking out the islands, as well as Split.
