Picking a Camera help?

Hi guys,

I know theres quite a few threads w/ this subject but none really helped me, so i'm making a new thread.

the big question- What video camera should i get?(including hdslr's)


My price range is $0 to $650 max(only if i really like it)

I edit with powerdirector deluxe 9

I have a good amount of experience, and I don't mind steep learning curves anyway

I have gopro hd and mounts for that currently and a tripod and other various stuff

I would mainly be filming skiing but probably some skating too, but that doesnt matter, i want it to be good for SKIING

I definitely want -good quality
-manual focus
- threads for a fisheye
I preferably want-no touch screen
-viewfinder
-mic and headphone terminals
- no touch screen

And I was thinking about the hv40, i mean it seems good but idk if i will like mini dvs......

T2i is another option but idk if i'll want to use a slr..... cant you like no see wat ur filming on the screen?

and yes i personally can get the t2i for under 650


Whatever, thanks for any help, K+ for bumps, I appreciate any help, hate if you want.......i dont really care.

Well once you film a little with a camera, you know what angle you can film at. Ive used my cam for 2 years, and i can just hold it at any angle without looking at the lcd and already know what the footy is gonna look like. It just takes a little fiddling around with. Get the T2i if youve done some film work. and if you could, you wanna hook me up with that t2i for 650 deal? jw.

I would abuse the fuck out of that deal... You could probably get nice lenses when you get the money too. And yes, the T2i has liveview (viewing what it's recording on screen). It spits out amazing quality, even with the kit lens, but you really need to upgrade your lenses to get the fullest out of your camera. And the HV40 uses tapes I believe? (DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THAT). Tapes are a pretty undesirable characteristic to have in video cameras now adays. Easily, hands down go with the T2i, and thank me later.

Hahaha ima boutta make a buisness 700 t2is i get 50 dollar comission haha jk i wouldn't do that. and yea possibly i'll see what i can do:) and would it be a good idea to get the t2i body only for super cheap and then just get a nice lens? and might seem like a dumb question but t2i has manny focus, inputs, and a shoe right?

It would be nice to know what gear you already have, because a fairly usable HDSLR setup is going to run you 1200$ or more, unless you already have some of the necessary items.

and yes it has manual focus, it has a mic input, just no headphone output, and yes a hot shoe(all dslr's do)

@ i forgot your name....... I get a discount so think about it 500 for t2i, kit w/ stock lens. 150 for another lens...... get a mic in a month or two. i already have a handle and tripod. there ya go lol

oh yeah and can you look through the viewfinder when filming? and what are the limitations of hdlsr/slrs?

is it a fluid head? haha, but the handle won't be sufficient enough for follow cams if you'll be doing them, but it seems like your in a good position man

You really should do some research before you buy anything.

Honestly, get the hv40 or an hfs100/200 or whatever the sd card version of the hv40 is.

and nah its not a fluid head and i appreciate all this but i mean i'm more determined on getting the camera, accesories i'll worry about later. and the fs100 is out of my price range, and fs200 is too expensive for what it's worth and i never saw anything that said it had many focus, and in addition; it doesn't have great batt. life, which isn't ideal for skiing

because it improves video a lot, and because i plan to get like an xh or hvx sometime in the future and they have tons of manual controls so the manny focus would get me used to it, but mainly because i just like it lol. and i mean i just want it as an option unless i get like a t2i( it has af but its pretty slow).


why? what camera do u think i should get?

It doesn't improve video you just have to focus which is a pain in the ass. Also on a t2i you have manual focus to control DOF which is totally different. And manual controls are not the same as manual focus

i know but manual focus is a manual control and the t2i had other manual controls as well. Do u have a camera recomendation?

im not sure if you fully understand what youre getting yourself into with a t2i... but if you can get one for so cheap (assuming you can get a deal on glass too) i would take that and youll figure it out

I completely understand what i'm getting into........



and man don't be so mean to people:/. I'm only saying that i definitely want manual focus as an option for the camera that i get........I never once said that any camera with manual focus will be perfect for me.........soooooooooooo..........

and i want it because i like the look of some things being in focus and other being extremely blurry, but i like to customly do that................. i just dont understand, why does it matter to you?...... just be nice to people

He's not being mean, just straightforward, and yes, most all of the cameras in your price range have manual focus, and trust me coming from a person that never uses manual focus because he shoots 24p on his dvx, its a pain in the ass not have auto focus sometimes, but i got used to it, now i enjoy it more for most situations, but the real question is do you fully understand iso's, aperture, and shutter speed, also having a deep depth of field isn't achieved by manual focus, its achieved by a small aperture

i mean im being completely honest, no. but don't you think that i could get used to all of it before next ski season? and alright sorry for the misunderstanding. and i honestly do appreciate the feedback but do you have a recomendation?

manual focus=/=DOF. the t2i will give you this. but it also comes at the price of you having to know what youre doing with the camera. i would do more research about the t2i and then pick it up when youre ready since you get a deal on it

maybe like a canon hf series or panasonic tm series but you wont get the DOF with those, sounds like you want the look a DSLR can give you but you dont know enough about it haha

I mean you could achieve it with those, i do with my dvx, but i have to be zoomed in to Z30 or more really and it it has to be on a fully open iris
