do canadians outside of french canada know french?

or is it like California where most people just know some spanglish...enough to get by when ordering food, and talking to day laborers?

the closer to quebec you live the more likely you are to know some french, for the most part people cant speak it outside of quebec, but some can. I can get by with it.

no its basically when you take every class you normally would in English in French, aside from English class

i was in it for the first few of my elementary years but since then ive pretty much forgotten everything haha.

I'm a native france-french speaker, and it takes me awhile to adjust to quebec french when I'm there.

I'm not some linguistic professional, but comparing the 2...it seems to me that quebec french is made to be a bit more english. I've noticed english words that are dropped into french (for example...chums. Really? Chums?) And pronunciations are altered to be a bit more english sounding.

Radio/news is generally easy to understand, but goddamn, informal/slang talk is impossible.

ya godamn right! all us murikans can holler and get er done with the best uh them boys down south.


the crazy english speakers are the jibberish speaking ones from northern britain. even when they try and speak slowly to me, i have to pick out a few words here and there to try and understand wtf they are saying.

really eh? from my experience i've noticed a greater use of english words in france french than quebec french... "on va faire du shopping" and shit like that, its fucked

the thing keeping quebec french is bill 101. which i think is actually cool because it preserves our culture. also, french in quebec is to france as english is to england. its way less formal sounding

Quebec french is also closer to the original French that was spoken in 16th and 17th century France. Just as American English is closer to Shakespearean English than today's British English.
