Is there a way to train to pop higher?

I'm tired of getting maybe 1/2' of pop because of my chunky '09 Anthems + boots, is there a way I could strengthen my legs for a better pop, particularly in the off season?

No, I honestly don't think thats possible. But you can use ankle weights.

No. Squats(preferably high intensity, explosive squats) and a variety of plyometrics (box jumps being a big one) will all help you improve your explosion/vertical thus increasing your pop. These exercises take some skill and knowledge to do properly, so your best bet is to get in contact with a local trainer/fitness expert and tell him what you want to work on/improve. He will be able to help with this far better and more safely than NS.

I don't ever pop on straight airs, but on tricks just jump and throw your back into the trick

standing with a barbell with weights on it placed across your shoulders. reverse "C" in your back, chest out, chin up, looking diagonally above it, feet shoulder-width apart angled slightly outwards, bend down like you're taking a shit and thrust back up.

I always like nollie'ing instead of ollieing because it feel better for me. Try that out instead of just jumping. And I know the chunky-ski boot feeling. I have the Spk pro's from a couple years ago and they're mad fat and heavy, but comfortable, none the less.

tie weights to your feet and stand in a pool that is exactly your height so you have to jump to breathe. that way you have to jump!

Put ur ski boots and skis on and go in your backyard and do 100 ollies everyday for the whole summer then when the season comes around youl be poping em huge.

lunges do well, always stretch to make you muscles loose then just work on jumping straight up with all your weight balanced

you want to push your tails into the snow and once you have put ur desired pressure on your tails you want to jump slightly while lifting up your tails. its sorta like skating except instead of pushing on the front to lift up your tails you simply pull up your tails and rock your tips down slightly.


If not the technique do some squats and maybe get into long boarding or mountain biking. Cheers!

I've just been pressuring my tails a ton and bending them, then launching off that energy. Any bump at all, even a tiny snowboarder lip, can launch you if you get that technique down.

as its been said do squats, but you should also do deadlifts because you can get more explosion than squatting. Any real explosive training that focuses on your quads, don't worry about your calfs as you would for regular vert training.

What? why would you lean back off of a jump? you flex the front of your boots because you have to match the landing

Having line anthems is like having noodles on your feet. If you are really serious about being able to pop more get some stiffer skis for your next pair, ive got the 9ward HHPs and love em

They're FAR from limp for me, my 171s - which are as tall as I am - only bend when I want them to, and even then they're tricky. Until these bust, there is no way in hell I'm laying my very limited funds on anything other than powder skis or (fingers crossed) my first ever mountain trip. I am NOT spending my 6th season skiing the fucking prairies for the whole season, and being a mountain virgin yet again.

Thank you for the advice guys, I'll be working hard this summer it appears.

No point in powder skis if you aren't living anywhere with powder or travelling there frequently, even with a trip out west you aren't guaranteed fresh snow. Maybe work a couple months and move out west for a season, then you will actually need powder skis. As for popping, comes with practice/strength, weight of skis do not make a huge difference.

This. The more muscle you throw in you the higher you get, but by far the most power comes from the tails.

I disagree. If you know what's up, you can most definitely pop big nollies off of noodle skis like anthemns. I can ollie higher on my bents than anything else.

My advice: skate all summer. Skate gaps and trannies all day erryday. Guaranteed next season you'll be able to ollie higher and tranny match better.

no, not at all. you need to extend up with your whole body. popping off your tails will put you back seat, and although it may work. your landing will be harsh and in the back of your boots.

I've realized powder skis would be impractical unless I can manage more than one trip. I was just saying what I'd rather spend my money on. I plan to execute that ' work in the summer and move west' plan after high school is done this year.

Also, guy who suggested practicing my ollies on a skateboard, there's one problem: I don't skateboard.

this advice, but rollerblade. when I was a grom and had to rollerblade everywhere in town my legs were like rock solid. I never experienced my legs getting tired skiing until I stopped rollerblading.

way off. for jumps you obviously dont do this, but if you cant figure out how to pop off jumps you're retarded. this is for rails, so you dont do the little 1-2 step thing. stepping on is wack, ollie'ing is proper.

for me personally i feel like its anything just to keep me active.  I bike everywhere pretty much all year round which keeps my legs in good shape.  I try to skate (inline) at our park at least a few times a month for a few hours during the summer.  But overall i just find keeping busy helps me.

Well yeah, keeping moving helps of course. Blading is a constant leg workout though, add the impact from jumps or drops done in aggressive inline and your legs become as solid as concrete.

P90X plyometric jump training...do that for a few months and your legs will be way stronger

There is a way to train yourself to pop higher. Plyometric exercises involving vertical jump will make you pop higher.

I don't pop off the tails of my skis, i just go with the flow of the take off and just jump straight up at the lip and set the spin. But the jumps in my park are really poppy.

Completely disagree. There is no such thing as an ollie on roller blades. No back to front weight transfer or anything of that nature. Yes skateboarding and skiing are very different and have totally different stances/mechanics, but the back to forward motion of the ollie on either skis or a skateboard is somewhat similar.

In a way yes, but not really. Please tell me how standing sideways and stomping on a tail then sliding your foot up a board is gonna relate to skiing at all. Yeah the way the board moves is close I guess but that's all.

My point was just that stronger legs will help you pop better in skiing. IMO blading is gonna build stronger legs than skating. that is all

I certainly didn't mean he should go out and try to ollie his rollerblades. Of course there is no such thing, they are stuck to your feet.

you can weight transfer your rollerblades tho,,, by rolling them out while you jump, it makes a smoother takeoff on trannys and stuff. but yeah skiing and rollerblading... u could call it an ollie but its not really as much involved as in skateboarding
