Hey NS, i want to start to buy some protein powder to help get leaner and bigger muscle after workouts. I was just wondering if any of you have any companies that you would recommend or brands to stay away from? thanks!
Also I know you're not supposed to have lactose before a workout because the lactic acid is what makes your muscles sore. So I'm not sure if having whey protein, which contains lactose, is okay to have after working out.
Great website with do's and don'ts
I tried finding a good article from their that explained how protein works and the different types but looks like they deleted it from the website
Protein is what your muscles need to recover. Lactic acid causes muscle fatigue during workout. Soreness is caused because your have been tearing your muscles all day and they need to repair and protein is what they need to do so.
There is SO much mis-information going on in this thread.
Protein shakes are a very good way to get protein fast after a workout. There is an index of how quickly/how much of the protein your body can absorb/use and of course chicken and eggs are all up there, but whey protein is at the top. Expensive whey protein has a better taste generally but more importantly a lower heavy metal count. Theres no need buying the really expensive stuff but do some googling and find one that isnt going to poison your liver.
If you have too many protein shakes it isnt simply going to 'turn to fat' as someone has said. If you want to gain weight, eat 500 calories more than what your calorie maintenance is. Do some googling to work it out. Lose weight, 500 less than that. You cant simply cut 1000 or more off your diet because you body goes into starvation mode/catabolic mode and essentially eats your muscles. If you drink alot of shakes your body will store the excess calories as fat.
Look at Starting Strength for a good gym routine. Lift heavy, eat big.
I use the bsn syntha-6, it seems pretty balanced, tastes pretty good, has plenty of protein. Anyone else use this? I'm still on my first tub of it but it seems pretty good.
I have some Mutant whey, its pretty good and have some bcaa in it. If you dint want to get fatter, just buy some whey isolate, bodybuilding.com its the best place too buy supplmement
