'Slutwalk' Marches

"A new protest movement sparked by a policeman's ill-judged advice to women students to "avoid dressing like sluts" has taken root in the US and Canada."

Women are freaking out because a police officer advised women to dress less provocatively,slutty, and perhaps you wouldn't get attacked as often. What I'm getting from the article is women want to dress slutty and 'express their sexuality" but god forbid some dude from saying, "nice ass" as they strut by in assless chaps...

I'm all for lowering the sexual assault rate but I think these women need to take kung fu or something not
hold marches.

Thoughts?

if they want to dress sluttier and become bigger targets for rapists let them go ahead and be dumb as fuck. if they want to smarten up dont dress like that anymore? simple as that.

well im just saying, 9 out of 10 of my friends that are girls dont want to dress like skanks but not want to be treated like one. most of my friends from my knowledge want to be treated normally and dress normally.

The "girls that dress like sluts" demographic. If you're friends dress normally and get treated normally good for them, I'm discussing the girls that don't dress 'normal.'

Its the fault of both sides. I 100 percent agree that it is not the victems fault. at all. But i also agree that hey if you dont want to get raped then maybe dont dress super down. But i still agree more with the fact that its not the womens fault.

I think the point is that girls should be able to wear whatever they like, and not get raped, which sounds pretty fair to me.

first of all that is one of the stupidest things i have ever heard, and have you ever heard of having your cake and eating it too? you can either dress like a normal person and be a normal member of society, or as you seem to prefer, dress like a skank and get rapped, its really that simple.

Wow - this is awesome! Sorry, I've haven't been able to check in on NS in a while.

So to give a backside to this story: I am fortunate enough to be part of the awesome team at the student newspaper at York University (where this story originated), and we were able to break the story. I'd say that when I eventually got the rights to publish it to our twitter feed, it went viral within hours.

We actually didn't realize it was going to be such a big story, it came in the day before we went to print (weekly), and in our print newspaper it was a small story on the front (however, with big text to grab readers).

Why I think it took off: The issue at hand has the advantage of being a very simply concept (sticky) in society today. Though it brings to conversation many more complex issues of how our culture and behaviors are changing. I believe a story of this nature was bound to spring up and catch the publics attention, but even the day after it got national attention did we realize what was so profound about it.

The fact is, a large portion of the public is always looking for ways to criticize the police. This, I believe will never go away, but it was one of the main catalysts for the story bringing up so much talk.

We were able to get an apology within 12 hours of posting online, something that would never have been possible with just print. That is remarkable!
