Takes energy to create hydrogen. We have the next answer already , the next crutch or new raft to keep us afloat till cold fusion is figured out. NUCLEAR. We power nuclear subs and nuclear ships and aircraft carriers that can last ( dont know how long but its long).. We have the answer, its just a matter of time. PLUS our government knows it, its in the plans because Yucca mountain is already finished and just on standby for when its needed. There is a long term plan and its just being put off because of the national debt.

Yes. Wind and solar are far from being efficient. The ecstatic amount of money that would be put into creating those wind and solar farms would go much farther in testing and developing newer, more efficient solar panels and wind turbines. Also, I definitely agree that the private sector is superior for innovation.

Electric cars have seamless ( shiftless) direct drive electric motors, i Cant wait !! your everyday car, say a Mitsubishi Lancer will be a fucking rocket ship . I bet there programable too, imagine hacking your electric car , if we make it that far  the future is gonna be a blast.

Those are all products that absolutely depend on OIL for there production. Yes i agree that inflation is taking a toll, i agree. But the price of Oil  is probably responsible for those price increases in the short term.   Agree to Disagree from my side.

uhh yea i carpool like its my job, never drive out to the hill without 2 or 3 people in my car, but you still gotta buy gas when you carpool. and theres no sort of public transportation option to get where i have to go to ski. skiiing is not a necessity, but life would be pretty damn boring if i never got out of town due to not wanting to drive anywhere

dude your missing the point. yes carpooling is a good idea but high gas prices still make it really expensive. and its great that you got to ski all winter by bumming rides but i hope you compensated your driver fairly considering the rising gas prices

my point is that 4 people driving together is more expensive than it was a year ago. yes driving is a privilege but how can you argue that rising gas prices arent a big deal. high gas prices are just bad for the economy in general because consumers will cut back on spending. and trust me, my "mountain" in the ohio farmlands does not offer any sort of bus or i'd be all over that shit

furthermore there is regulations as to the oil reserves that nations have to in order to sell crude oil at a certain price. These numbers have been "muffed and skewed"  in the past and therefore we are feeling these repercussions now. People are willing to take short cuts in other aspects of their life in order to drive and until that ceiling of tollerace is reached then this will be a continuing trend.

This is just accountants throwing things in a way that makes them look like their not almost extorting us.



If I'm growing apples and sell them $1/pound, but my production expenses are 40 cents/pound one would say I am making 60 cents a pound.

Now, if I had an apple farm and said that my income is 30k/year. I sell 60k of apples a year. Operating expenses being 24k. I could word it saying, I'm only making 10 cents a pound, or 6k in the whole year after all expenses.

That is exactly what they're doing. They're saying 'oh! we're only making 2 cents/gallon! we're not fucking pigs!"

Guess what, that 2 cents a gallon is AFTER they've paid EVERYTHING. INCLUDING their massive salaries.
As in that money is income, AFTER EVERYTHING is paid. And that income? $ 30 fucking BILLION a year.


so that 4$? yea, that translates into their $383 billion in revenue. Then after they've lined their own pockets, $30 billion of shareholders or whatever the fuck the do with their income.


They are making a killing off of us, and now that gasoline is almost an essential service, it's practically extortion.

Seriously, you guys need to quit whining. In Sweden its about $9 a gallon. I had yet to be born when it costed $4.

I think high gas-proces are a good thing, especially if a lot of it is tax. That makes people not want to buy as much and look into other types of cars, that are better for the environment .

Here in Austria, it costs me almost 100 euros to fill up my gas tank... that's $143.50. Gas is cheap in the USA, quit complaining ;)

This is it.

Oil is purchased in dollar amounts. Go find some stock websites (www.finviz.com is great for a visually enticing way to see the market). Dollar devalues and oil goes up. Dollar strengthens and oil goes down.


I would also like to add that there are a few other metrics that people look at and that is crude inventories, and various other numbers from opec and oil producing countries stating their current output per day as well as any plans to increase/decrease/or not change the quantity being produced.


Throw in the fact that E85 ethanol is a DOMESTIC WAY TO GET YOURSELF OFF FOREIGN OIL (I like to put that in caps) and e85 is obviously CORN.....you can watch the price of corn steadily rise over the past few years until we are basically once again near all time record highs for corn.

State, local, and federal taxes. BUT DON'T FORGET your state and local taxes pay for the roads to be worked on and the revenue collected there must be in line with the budget they wish to maintain. This is important in my theory here, because my theory is gasoline taxes rise as gasoline consumption decreases. E.G. americans think they can escape high prices at the pump by buying hybrids and efficient vehicles, when in reality if everyone started using wayyy less gasoline but still drove just as much. Your local governments would be forced to basically increase taxes on gasoline to pay for road repairs because their revenue could be staying flat.


It is a fucked up issue, and we should really end this conversation with....even if we do have any extra capacity come online for oil production - it is gone before it is even out of the ground basically. With China and India's fascination with the automobile (as if we americans don't love these things) we are seeing all the extra supply brought online basically being fed to them.


Also I do not think we should edit the fed, or move back to the gold standard and instead allow for a floating currency. This is what allows for countries to be great. If you want a great currency, have a great country (look at Australia).

All the exporting Australia does in regards to mining and other natural resources makes its currency stronger every day.


The fed needs to quit giving subsidies to oil companies, and they need to raise interest rates. You would notice an immediate appreciation of the dollar with the interest rate hike and the subsidies are just bullshit.

Long term - move everyone to natural gas. Natural gas seems to be a resource that even America has endless sources of. You can argue about drilling and it does in deed need to happen, but its an ugly thing that can destroy some beautiful land.


Many vehicles exist that run on CNG but adoption rate is slow due to the lack of fueling stations with natural gas.

I'm sorry the U.s is getting away easy. You are paying $1.10 per litre. Canada we look at $1.30 or more depending on what part of the country. Europe has been paying $2.10+ a litre for years now.
Either N.A is going to have change the way they drive and use gasoline or the prices will just sky rocket.

No, this isn't it. Not for a country like Canada anyways. If a single company owns EVERYTHING from the oil in the ground to the pipeline to the gas station, the only buying that is getting done is the consumer purchasing gasoline from the company.

Not too long ago I remember gas being 60 cents/litre. Less than half what it is now. That was like 10 years ago. There is no way in hell our dollar has inflated about 120% in the past 10 years. You'd have to be autistic, have downs, and have aids to think that.

And considering the gas I'm putting in my tank has NOTHING to do with anything outside Canada. Explain why Libya makes the price rise, a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico makes the price rise, etc etc.


Explain to me then, why have my gas prices more than doubled in 10 years? IMPOSIBRU!!

cost of exploration, extracting, refining, taxes, and finally transporting the oil to the gas station lookin to make a penny off ya plus dollar devaluation combined with increased consumption from developing countries compounded by the fact the world "shares oil" and the price for oil is figured in 2 places.

cushing oklahoma i think and the brent crude united kingdom who gives a fuck. whatever these places see the cost of oil costing them per barrel is what everyone pays. and people can speculate on futures, which is actually purchasing thousands of gallons of gasoline at X price and selling it maybe 20 seconds, 20 minutes, or 20 days later for a profit without ever taking physical ownership of the oil.......and you have used margin as well so your 500 dollars had 50:1 margin rolling so you were really speculating just like everyone else was to try and make a quick buck.

In Canada you're allowed to car pool, but as soon as someone chips in for gas it's illegal. Fucked eh. Thank you greyhound lobbyists.  And I think they let it slide now, but Allo Stop (ride share program) got sued by greyhound. And greyhound won. So they weren't allowed to operate in Ontario anymore. And I don't think they're allowed to offer Montreal-Toronto hook ups still.

What kind of truck are you driving that takes premium???


I live in a rural area, and I don't want to move to a city. No public transportation and a 15 minute drive to work means I pretty much have to drive. Yeah I could bike ten miles to work and back every day I guess, but that would suck bigtime.

My solution, bought a 250 ninja about 5 years ago. I think it gets 60 or 70 miles to the gallon.

Have a guess, then times that guess by at least 10, and you'll still be short.

Not to mention that drilling an exploration well is around 500 million, that may or may not prove to be an economically viable production asset.  Total cost for a new field offshore is around 60-100 billion USD.

I know big numbers are hard to get your head's around, but trust me, you absolutely 100% NEED oil companies to be making such big profits if you want the system to work....   they need this money to re-invest in new developments, exploration, cleaner fuels, future energy.....    they spend BILLIONS, they support global economies.

Without oil supermajors doing what they do - everyone would be fucked.  It's just the numbers involved are huge.  I can literally spend 4 million in a morning.....  shit ain't cheap.

Taxes are a big reason why gas is expensive though.  In the UK, gas is amongst the cheapest in the world PRE-TAX.... but then the government add's 80% to it....   and yeah it's about 10/12 $ a gallon in London....

but yea:

so if you're driving me from my house to the corner store and I pay for gas, it's fine. If you drive me to the ski hill and I pay for gas, it's illegal.

But, it's not illegal if all these conditions are also met
-I pay you once a week or less
- there are no more than 1 round trips per day to any location
-if you're not my employer, you're not allowed to own any other vehicle that is used for car pooling.
