Turn down DIN for summer?

Should know this, but do I want to wind down my Jesters for the summer? To save the springs or something? They are around 14 right now. Thanks would aearchbar but on my phone

ya. preserves the accuracy of the springs. put some tape on their saying to reset the dins though, or you will forget and have a super sloppy first run of the year.

if they are that close then turn them down, but not all the way, drop them to like 10

haha i should probably do that. I've always remembered but If i forget, I'll probably just pop out when doing my first butter/nollie or whatever on flat ground and not die.

No, ALL THE WAY. Even taking the spring adjustment set screw will not hurt the binding, you just have to put it back in (if it comes all the way out).

You should always set the din as low as it will go during the summer. Even if you only run your din setting in the bottom 50% of your bindings DIN range.

And, this question is for the OP. Why are you running your din at 14? Especially on a shitty plastic binding?

And, answer from the OP ... Why at 14? I'm 6'2, 200 pounds and I'd like to think a pretty aggressive skier. 14 is the point i got to where I had no more unwanted releases.
Shitty plastic binding? your opinion, sure. won't take it personally. I have these jesters on my all mountain/park skis and STH 16s on my Bents. I trust the STH a bit more and suspect they'll last longer but Jesters haven't failed/bothered me at all and i like the lighter weight.

UMMMMM, I DUNNO. i just have them?

My brother was out for three season because of an injury from soccer and I had turned his din's down all the way without him knowing just to keep his bindings in good shape. Then upon his big return to skiing we got off the lift and on his first turn he double ejected and was so confused! I had forgotten about it too but it was SO funny!

Just an FYI, my friend (who is a tad bigger than you) and definitely skis aggressively. He also has Jesters. He has them set at 13 (fine) and has broken 5 pairs of Jesters this season. Every single time it has been the toe piece, why do you think Marker is coming out with the "Jester Pro"? Cuz most of their pro-skiers break them too often. If you are skiing them at 14, and not breaking them when you release, you probably have your forward pressure off. And just a suggestion, if you ride at 14, or anywhere above 10, get an 18 din binding.

You're saying because he ISN'T breaking them, his forward pressure is off? You're a tool. He clearly said he's had no problems, so why should he shell out more when he doesn't need too?

I'm 6"5, 210lbs and have my dins on my race ski's at 10 - I NEVER have any unwanted releases. I know it's thug to have them at 14, but unless you're hucking 30 foot cliffs on a daily basis, don't tell me you really need them there...

I am saying, the max shearing stress of the Marker Jester Toe piece, at colder temperatures, is pretty close to the max release value. So...... With moderate use at those values, your are BOUND to break them. But, if you are a lighter person who has incorrectly set forward pressure, you will likely need to crank up the din higher than it should be, to get the same results.

Point being, You can't take a narrow ass piece of plastic, ans subject it to din pressures above like 10, without expecting failure pretty frequently.

So yes, I am saying, if he is coming out of the binding when he "should" and staying in when he "should" and his din is set at 14, he should probably be breaking the binding.

And, unless he has like size 6 feet (doubtful), he should NOT have his din at 14, even at his height and weight.

I'm 6' 170 and I ride at 14. He could be a very aggressive skier, who are you to tell him what his dins ought to be at. If he's aggressive enough they should be at 14 to prevent unwanted releases

No, I am saying if the binding is functioning correctly, (the Jester), and the forward pressure is set correctly, skiing around at a din of 14 will BREAK THE TOE PIECE. They are shitty plastic shit. That is all I am saying. I ski well above what the din chart says I should, but I have an all metal 18din binding. Not Jesters. Why do you think the Jester Pro has a metal bar through the whole damn thing next year?

Sparknotes: I am not saying his din is too high, I am saying with a din at 14 on a jester, if the forward pressure is set correctly he should be breaking the bindings OFTEN. The Jester toe piece sucks for aggressive/heavy skiers.

from the designers of a binding company, turning down the DIN to preserve the springs from wearing down does not do anything.
don't bother, it doesnt make any difference.

I don't really know whose opinion your talking about, but you, and they, are both wrong. A spring weakens with time if under tension. The K value might be the same, but the equilibrium length might change. So in order to get a din value of 5, you have to crank it to 6. It has happened to my bindings, and it is common engineering knowledge.

well after talking to the designers and engineers of a binding company, i received a different opinion. the springs ski bindings use are very strong too. i have seen no difference from leaving my bindings set at 8 or 9 year round for a season or two or three, but thats me.

He has not experienced this though. The force at higher DIN's would not break the binding EVERY time, because if that were the case they would snap if you torque tested them at 16 with one of those machines shops use to test bindings. If that were the case, marker would not be able to say that the DIN goes to 16. There are people that shred way harder than you with jesters that get by with them.

Well the toe spring on one of my old pairs of PX15s (the bomber pivot toe) had a spring that needed to be set at 11 to gain a value of 9. I had only used it for 10 months. So it probably depends on the binding, but its gonna happen.

And to Go-Huge. Your right, people charge harder than me on Jesters, cuz I don't use them... People like Phil, who has broken 5-6 pairs this season.

IT IS WHY THEY PUT A FUCKING THICK METAL BAR ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE BINDING FOR NEXT YEAR.

It is because the binding could not take what so many skiers were giving it.

I understand that. I had to upgrade to fks 180s because I got sick of breaking toe pieces on the plastic toe rossi has. I went through 3 of them before I realized that the inconvenience of it pissed me off enough that I needed an all metal toe. I'm just saying that you're really convinced he needs to pay for an all metal binding, when he has not experienced problems with the jesters. People have experienced problems, and marker is addressing them with the metal pin through the toe, but this kid specifically has not run into any problems,. That's all I'm saying. There are a lot of people who will appreciate the changes marker is making for next season. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I am saying he should, needs to, or has to do anything. I am saying Marker makes a shitty binding. And anyone his size, SHOULD be breaking the Jester toe piece at a din of 14. I am just doing math, I don't really care if he gets new bindings.
