I played the whole game in a dark room with headphones on and after the third time getting croaked by the monsters, it wasn't scary anymore and the fact that you got back to full health and respawned close-by with all progress saved, there was no reason to run away.

But still, the mood remained very ominous throughout, a wonderful game, but at it's basics just a fetch-quest sim with fun physics.
