60Hz versus 120Hz

I need to get a new hdtv for my room, looking for a 35"ish 1080p, but i don't really know.. how much of a difference is there between 60Hz and 120Hz and how does it manifest itself? i watch netflix and movies on it, and play COD and skate. on a scale of 1 to 10, i'd say i'm a solid 8 on the "caring how good the picture looks" scale

120Hz makes everything look like a soap opera...it's awful. 1080p in 60Hz looks awesome.

see i thought 120hz would only help the soap opera effect... didnt know for sure though

if you are going to spend money on a tv, you might as well get the 120 hz. im guessing you are going to get an LDC? they are pretty cheap now and days

higher refresh rate = smoother motion.

What this means is that all those films that were painstakingly filmed to look artistically pleasing will be degraded to the same motion qualities of a soap opera. 120Hz is a worthless gimmick, like HDV cameras.

word. how's it look for video games? probably better but i can't imagine any video games are faster than 60fps right?

Well, I am biased because I prefer videogames to have the motion qualities of film; the reason I dislike 120Hz is because it makes films look like videogames! But really, 120Hz for videogames will just make everything look even less realistic. Some like this, others don't.

Remember, refresh rate is the speed at which the TV displays the content, which is 60fps in this case. It isn't a frame rate in itself because TVs do not have frame rates; likewise, film projectors do not have refresh rates.

right. well i'm from the same side as you, i have a bias towards 24. thanks for the info dude (and the good news-- the 60hz are way less $)

My TV is 1080p 120hz and i had to switch the "smooth" setting from clear to smooth or something and it made it not look too clear or soapish and i think its great for games and tv watching.

word. thing is, i'd have to hear someone give me a GREAT reason to spend like, a couple hundred more for the 120hz version of any of the ones im looking at, you know what i mean? price difference is pretty big

you might get less ghosting on a 120hz for video games. other than that, when i watched a dvd for the first time on the new 120hz tv it felt really weird. feels like its going normal pace then speeds up then slows down. can't explain it. turned off 120hz and then everything felt a lot more fluid.

I have toyed with those settings as well, and what I have noticed is fragmented smoothing, meaning the image inconsistently oscillates between smooth and normal, in ~5 second intervals. It's like watching footage fade between 24p and 60i every 5 seconds. It drives me nuts.

Keep in mind ghosting and motion blur are two different things. All Xbox360 and PS3 games I've played have displayed nicely in 60Hz, in fact I've only noticed ghosting in 120Hz mode, which was likely due to the inconsistent smoothing issue.

i have a 42" lg lcd 1080p 60Hz and its just fine for video games and movies. I haven't had a great chance to compare the 120Hz side by side with it but as far as money is concerned the same tv in 120Hz was quit a bit more and not worth the extra cash as far as i was concerned

and the ln40c650 is a solid tv. i have the 40 in the same model and i like it.

he could get the ln40c5XX which is the 60hz for even cheaper.
