Here's the deal, two years ago my dad bought a '99 mustang GT as a fun car to whip around in. Last summer we put in a cold air intake and saw awesome increases in power, acceleration, and exhaust tone. I'm not by any means a motor head, but i really enjoyed doing the project and feeling the results.
My birthday is approaching and I'm looking for another little, easy project for my dad and I. I've considered a couple different items; 78mm BBK Throttle intake (plenum/manifold hybrid), SLP Loudmouth Resonators, and SLP Loudmouth II Mufflers. All three are relatively cheap and easy to install.
My question is about the Loudmouth II Mufflers. Is it worth swapping the stock mufflers for these, without purchasing an aftermarket x-pipe, headers, and cats. I want the sound, but I want gains in HP and torque as well. It's not reasonable or cost-efficient to purchase and entire exhaust.
So is it worth doing?

i don't think a muffler is going to give you any hp gain at all. it'll change the sound but if you want performance you'll get results from headers and an x pipe

that's what i was thinking. I don't know much about cars, but considering the pipes don't restrict air flow like the stock mufflers, i could see gains in HP

By replacing the muffler you're only reducing restriction right at the end of the system. Muffler forward it's still going to be just as restricted as it was before. Unless you just want it to sound better there isn't much point doing the muffler without doing the rest of the exhaust system.

fuck. i don't want "artificial" sound. i want it to sound great, but i want there to be horsepower behind that sound.
what do you think of the plenum/manifold hybrid?

do exhaust before u do the intake manifold upgrade....u will see the most bang for buck with ur car by doing a full exhaust upgrade...intake manifold gains are fairly minimal. compared to the 30+ horses u will get from exhaust...if u r budgeted just do a header back system... get higher flowing cats and less restrictive piping..i am sure u could ebay all of these parts for around 500 bucks for a full system

alright sick. i'd really love to do this, it's just a matter of mechanical knowledge/lack of a lift. my dad and i have little mechanical knowledge, but if it comes down to detaching and reattaching pieces i can do that

Yeah, if you just thrown on an aftermarket exhaust, it's gonna be crap. Friend bought a 88 supra, huge-ass exhaust. It's a pretty powerful car, but the exhaust sounds like a dying rhino passing a kidney stone at 2000rpm.
