college/univeristy??

OK, i thought college and university were the same thing.
but today i read in the newspaper about law school at stanford and how the students had at first gone to college and then went on to university at stanford.

so what is college, what is the difference between college and university? is a university just a 'better' college?

in sweden we have high school until the age of 18 and then it´s univeristy and nothing in between.

No, I am almost positive the law school at Stanford is a graduate school (a school to get a masters and a PHd). You either go to a college or a University after high school. It is the same as in Sweden!

Some schools are called colleges and some are universities but they are the same thing. THen you go to graduate school after that if you want to.

High School then College/University then Graduate School.

Universities are composites of a bunch of colleges. Universities have say: the college of fine arts, the college of medecine, etc.

it's different in canada and the us i think.. colleges are more hands on activities, and universities are more theory oriented. this is in canada, at least.

yea, canada is different. right now in ontario (i'm the last year to go through this) we have o.a.c.'s (grade 13), and in order to get into university you gotta go to oac. the difference between college and university in canada is that college is for more practical jobs, and if you wanna get into a big profession such as a doctor or lawyer or metioroligist or something you go to university.

yeah as well college in canada costs alot less than university. but darryl prety much said it. to get into college its kinda for the 'lazy' or unitelligent (the harsh way of saying it) these colleges u dont need high marks to get in. your basicly automaticly accepted unless u are entering a course with a high number of entrants and a limited class size. As for university u pay alot more and u need top marks to get in. unless its a crappy university. but colleges offer courses for 'hands on' jobs and universitys look more into the high end.'snobbish' or high end of society jobs. doctors and lawyers and buisness and tech.

At college you can take courses that you would have to take at universtity anyway for cheaper. Say if you want to be a lawyer you can take all the intro courses, (the courses that are mandetory for the first couple years) then transfor over to a university, it helps keep the cost down for sure.

you get a title basically or what? like philosophie doctor or candidate or master or...?


what kind of practical jobs do you actually need to study for after high school?

or you mean like economic ASSISTANTs and teachers??

i´m studying computer science 4.5 years so i guess i would go to a university then right?

if you were taking computer science in Canada you could take it in either. The University course would be focused on things like building and maintaining a business of software development. Where a college course would teach you how to develop the software itself.

We have colleges here, but they cost a hell of a lot more, and you only get a diploma instead of a degree. Universities are a lot better, coz you're more likely to get a job. Thats just here anyway!

Anyone here go to UBC? I want to get in there when I'm finished with highschool. I'll probably take at least at year in college and then transfer into UBC, if I can.
